I am from California and planning my trip to Cornell as a freshman.

Since it is substantially cheaper to fly to Syracuse nonstop than to Ithaca via New York or Philadelphia etc., like to know how much a hassle would it be to and from Syracuse airport? Any better route?

Any way to avoid having to ship all stuffs home over the summer break?

As a Californian driver, am I eligible to apply for a NY driver license without taking more tests?

Thanks.

hey, i'd like to know too!

Not very much of a hassle at all. There are buses that run directly from Syracuse Airport to North Campus. It will cost $50 each way though.

There are at least a couple of summer storage options. There are local storage facilities that you can rent where you have to take your stuff there in spring and pick it up when you return. A more convenient but expensive option is a service provided by Big Red Storage (or something like that) which will pick up stuff in your room and deliver it to your room when you return in the fall. There are probably other options depending on whether you have friends who live off campus and might have storage space or whether you will be moving off campus into an apartment.

Thanks for your responses. Hope there'll be more to come in.

I don't know the answer to your driver's license question but you could probably get the answer off of the internet -- at a NYS motor vehicle site. But why would you need a NY driver's license if you already have one from your home state? Are you planning to become a NY resident? If not, I don't think you need to change your driver's license to drive in New York (or any other state).

how far is ithaca airport form campus? and how much does the shuttle cost? thanks!

odyssey,

Checked NYS DMV website, I don't need a NYS drivers license after all.
Thanks.

Any suggestion on how to get away from shipping all the stuff home in summer? I am thinking of bringing my laserjet printer!

Karen

You'll have to pay for storage. Or, if you're lucky (like me), your parents will have a friend who lives in Ithaca and you can store your stuff with them.

A simple way to avoid shipping home all kinds of 'stuffs' over break is to simply not accrue that much stuff. As long as all you're bringing home are clothes, shoes, and possibly a laptop or some other kinds of electronics, you could probably get away with stuffing most of that in your suitcases and maybe bringing along an extra one (for which Airlines charge) or using a shipping service (which wouldn't technically solve the problem of shipping home all kinds of 'stuffs', but the point is to just watch how much stuff you're piling into your room as the year goes on).

Just found Big Red Storage...607 272 2000 or http://bigredboxes.com/info/services/storage.php#rates

Looks like a great idea...the price is based on pounds stored; you can either drop off at a counter (for freshmen, probably RPC is best...that's right across the driveway from my S's dorm), or for a bit more, they'll come pick up...either way they'll deliver it to your new dorm the following year...I'm going to look into it for my S's stuff...hauling his footlocker, refrigerator and winter gear back and forth in May and again in August is something I'd like to avoid!

Also check out [Cornell University: Summer and Abroad Storage and Moving | Storage Squad](http://www.storagesquad.com/). Storage Squad is a new company I think that stores things over the summer or when you go abroad. They have decent prices and free boxes.

Or get a self storage unit in town to store the things…
