Planning my Planner

I'm looking for suggestions for how i should arrange my class. Things like...

Should you space your class out evenly throughout the days such as one morning one night? Or bunch them together to get it out of the way

What time is usually preferable

Discussions right after class to prevent walking or later so you can spend time to review

What about finals? Two in one day? What about the time for finals? Afternoon? Morning?

Note: I'm probably going to take ECE15, WCWP10, Math20B, and Chem6A. So it's usually two lectures a day. (Not too much right?)

bunched together so you’re not tempted to skip classes (it’s easier to skip one than three) but not so bunched together that you go 9 hours without a break.

whenever you work best. it depends on the person.

um, you have to walk to your discussion eventually. they’re usually not held in the same building as lecture.

as spread out as possible, and later in the week if you like to procrastinate. earlier in the week if you want to get out earlier. but i’ve never heard of anyone planning their class schedule around the finals schedule …

PS - you know that you have no say in when finals are, right? (minus some language classes) UCSD decides that for you.

Personally, I feel that having classes all at once (preferably morning classes) is better because then you can go rest/hangout or study for the rest of the day.

NO 8AM CLASSES because you are not going to wake up… and try not to have late like… 8PM classes because it’s going to be a drag.
I like having classes from 9-3 and having a break in between for lunch

Even if you have discussion right after class, it’s in another room because you would be in a lecture hall for the lecture…so that means you have to walk anyways. Personally, it doesn’t really matter as long as it’s fits nicely into your schedule. All math discussions are on the same day anyways and you usually go over math homework problems.

There are no classes during finals week, so you take that time to study. There are times when you may have 2 finals in one day, but you still get at least 30 mins in between. There is no final for WCWP10A/B, it’s just a paper due on the last day of the class. For Math…the finals are usually worth 40-60 percent of your grade.

Here’s a schedule I made for you with the classes you said you want to take. I didn’t take into account professor preference on the chem class (I’ve never heard of Sailor), but I simply put the classes where I would want them to be if it was me. Also, the chem section is full, but that’s where I would put it if it wasn’t. Remember, these are just my preferences, but I hope this gives you some sort of an idea of what a good schedule might be.

http://i128.■■■■■■■■■■■■■■■/albums/p183/soy_milk_jim/Untitled3.jpg</a></p>

^ now EVERYBODY will want you to customize their schedule and make it awesome from an older student’s point of view. valuable stuff - you should start charging by the hour :)

^^You MADE him a schedule?! Damnnnn you are wayyyyy too nice!! :)

@astrina

I thought that right after I made it. “Now everybody will want me to do this.” There’s no point in charging by the hour, it took me like 3 minutes. The hardest part was remembering my password for Photobucket.

@ucsandiego915

Why thank you kind young lady. :wink: I guess as a prospective teacher I feel like helping people is some practice for when I teach, plus I enjoy helping people anyway. I’m almost certain I’ll apply to be a tour guide this year too.

funny how your ideas of a “good schedule” tend to change – my freshman schedule was a lot like the one $KingsElite$ made, with classes five days a week and none starting earlier than 11AM.

http://img210.imageshack.us/img210/7817/screenshot20100827at157.jpg</a>
then junior year came along, i had this, and it was awesome. i had completely free wednesdays and fridays (didn’t go to section), and one optional lecture on mondays. and my TTh schedule ensured that once i got to campus for my 8 am class (which i did, since the prof knew my name), i wouldn’t be tempted to ditch any of my other classes.

^I actually go to all my sections though. =P That’s why I have everything balanced out so I’ll be all the more tempted to actually want to go to them and any one day doesn’t contain too much class. But everybody has their own preferences so it’s fine.

Thank you kingselite, astrina, ucsandiego, and clarkfobes, I love all your guyses’ advice haha. I was wondering, I’m scheduling my classes and on Monday I have class from 11 am- 3pm. Is this killer? It’s back to back classes.

^Nah, it’s better to get it over with. But I would recommend bringing lunch/snacks with you cause you’ll get hungry during those 4 hours

(the 10 minutes in between isn’t really enough time to go get food)

I’m so glad i made this thread. I was going to have my classes spread apart but i think bunched up makes sense.

@astrina
I think i can choose which lecture i want if i want a different finals day. Would you suggest i move my preferred time just to move my finals day?

@KingsElite
Wow, you truly are the parent of CC. Always so helpful on the forum. I LOVE YOU! :smiley:
EDIT: About the planner you made me, i think i’m going to follow that, or very close to that. But i’m wondering if 10 minutes between classes is enough time to get there. What happens if im late ):

I noticed in Math20B, it says Dong,Bin is the teacher for the first lecture, but the other lectures don’t have a teacher. Should i expect the same teacher?

^I wouldn’t suggest changing your lecture to change a final. The final is just one day and the lecture is for 10 weeks. I’d take the better lecture. All the distances between those back to back classes are makeable in 10 minutes. If for some reason you are a little bit late, it should still be no problem anyway. For the other lectures that don’t have a professor listed, it could be anybody. And really, helping you guys out is no problem at all. :)

So i adjusted my planner for about 30 minutes, and it seems like i’m going to follow yours exactly. Major props since it only took 3 minutes :)

Currently Chem6A is full with 30 and there is 1 on the waitlist. Would i expect the seat count to go higher that 30 since i heard they open more spots for freshmen?

hey guys,

is COGS 1 offered every quarter? i might put it off until winter quarter if possible.

for those classes that don’t say who’s teaching (“Staff” or blank like in the case of Math 20B) will the class list eventually say who’s teaching before we register? I thought they just left it blank/generic until registration time approached, but so far the class list still only says “Staff” or nothing at all. is it just blind luck then? because I really don’t want a bad math teacher. total pet peeve/grade killer for me personally.

Thanks!

@AndrewL

No. For most classes, including chem, they fill the class up by discussion sections. That section is full. You can switch to another discussion for that lecture. Also, I don’t know if Sailor is a good professor or not. I just picked that lecture because the time was the best. I don’t know if the professor was something you were considering or if you just wanted the nicest schedule possible, but either way, there you go.

@92faim

Yes. Cogs 1 will be offered each quarter this year. And I don’t have any experience signing up for classes without professors listed, but there’s a chance they won’t have who is teaching the class down before you enroll.

$KingsElite$,
thanks for your reply. for classes like chem 6a, math 20b, etc. how big are the discussions, usually? thanks again!

^They enroll 30, but attendance varies if it isn’t mandatory.

I looked up Sailor on ratemyprofessor and he seems pretty good. So just making sure i get this, i can have that lecture time for Chem6A, i just need to choose a different discussion time? The only way the class is full is if ALL discussion times are full?

And does anyone know what classes exactly they open for freshmen? When?
