Planning my visit to the Duke Open House

Hey guys I am currently planning a college visit to Duke this Saturday, and I need help with what all I need to plan. I am interested mostly in a urban/sub-urban type of area. I live in the country, so anything that this is slightly better than this will be fine. I am coming from the bottom of the South Carolina border, traveling on I-95. Currently, I plan on majoring in Pre-Med. See if you help me out with these questions:

Should I visit more than just Duke?
I planned on visiting UNC Chapel Hill and NC State, but this would require another day (which can be adjusted). Should I go far enough to see Wake Forest? Are there any other colleges/universities I should visit? What are the top colleges closest to Duke that are worth visiting? (Just tell how far the school is and its rank e.x. John Hopkins-4 and a half hours)

What questions are key questions to ask during a student tour?
Surely since it is an open house, lots of people will ask excellent questions that will help me out during admission, other questions most likely will not be. So do I bring a pen and paper and take notes? For me, camera is a must.

I cannot think of another question yet for this visit, but what colleges would you prefer to see here, down in the South? UF, FSU, UGA, SCAR, Clemson, FU, Wofford, etc.

Also, I am a Ohio native and I can definitely see myself going to Ohio State, anyone know anything about them?

I don’t know what your schedule at Duke is, but UNC is only 20 minutes away. At least you can drive around UNC campus, eating on Franklin street, walk around a bit before heading home. UNC and Duke could be considered peers (it’s why Robertson Scholars take courses at both). In terms of reputation NC State is a notch down so is Wake Forest. NCSU is the most urban of them all, and it’s about 40 minutes from either Duke or UNC. I heard Raleigh is one of the best college towns.

The is no such thing as pre-med major. You can major in anything you want - even underwater basket weavering - as long as you satisfy a certain sequence of courses.

Wake isn’t that far away; depending on how fast you drive, it’s somewhere between 1 and 1 1/2 hours away from Duke. It’s one of my favorite schools and well worth a look, I think.

Be aware that all of these schools are fairly quiet in the summer and have nowhere near their normal activity levels.

^ NASCAR driver, any chance  It took me over 2 hours from UNC to Wake!

We did the same thing two summers ago. Went to UNC Chapel Hill, then Duke, then you could go to NCSU. It was two days for us. Chapel Hill was a really nice town, so stay overnight there rather than near Duke (not much charm, but it’s on the revival…).

I’m originally from Ohio. Don’t rule out Ohio U. as your safety. It’s a great school and actually I like the campus feel better than big OSU. My sister actually just finished her PhD at OSU though (undergrad from Kenyon). Her son is at Ohio U and LOVES it. Took a full ride offer there. Did you alreadly look at Denison? That was one of our favorite schools in OH.

jvtDAD- thanks for giving some details about those colleges. And I also believe I found my new passion thanks to you. Underwater Basket Weaving :D

warblersrule86- I realize that summer may be slow and not the same as it is during school, but I think the open house will be different since it is a major event held by Duke annually. I might go with you though and visit Wake Forest during the fall.

jkiwmom- I currently live in SC so I don’t know about Denison too much. I have so much family up by OSU, it’s crazy! I love Ohio, and truely and dearly miss it. I know that it still is one my list, just do not what where to rank it

Definitely visit Clemson! Let me know if you have any questions!

I actually have numerous friends who have gone to Clemson. What is your view of the college?

First off, it’s roughly 80 miles between Wake Forest and Chapel Hill, most of which is on the highway. Under 1.5 hours is doable.

Second, it’s hard to give advice here when we know nothing of you as a student? What are your stats?

i’ll write it up later tonight, but I can atleast visit the college

Absolutely! I was just at Duke with my daughter on Tuesday, it’s beautiful…As a NC resident, I’d like to help you out with other suggestions - so that’s where stats would be helpful.

SATstresser, I sent you a message!
