Planning on transferring with academic dismissal

OK so here is my situation. I graduated from a community college with an ok gpa 3.4, I got accepted into a private university with decent scholarship but I messed up my first semester. I decided about mid way through the semester that the program wasn’t for me. By the time I went to drop my classes I had missed the withdrawal date and failed the semester. The college dismissed me but gave me the option to appeal. I knew that the problem lied with me so I decided that the best thing would be to take a year off from school all together. So a year later I went back to my community college and made dean’s list in my new program. I am going to take 3 summer classes and apply to Rutgers in the fall but want to know how this academic dismissal will affect my chances for getting in. Will a college look at my current progress, overlook the dismissal and give me a chance? or am I doomed for life?

I know this is kinda old but Im going to bump it to see if I can get a answer.

They might give you a chance. Only one way to find out.
