Planning out coursework help

I'm currently a freshman taking Gen. Chem, Psych, and another writing class.

I'm trying to plan out Winter quarter -- should I start the Biology series? Also, I got a 5 on the AP Physics test and was wondering if I could just NOT take Physics throughout all of college for med school. I'm continuing Chemistry, obviously, and thinking about continuing Psych.

THANKS! :)

You need to check how your AP physics credit is recorded on your transcript.

Is it recorded as a course equivalent? Did you receive 2 semesters of physics credits? Did you receive lab credits?

If you answered yes to all of those, then it’s possible you can avoid physics; however not all med schools will accept AP credits in lieu of coursework.

The CA publics will not accept any AP credits, for example.

You will need to look up the AP credit policies for the schools you’re most likely to apply to. Some schools will; some won’t.

Sorry no easy answer to this question as policies vary by school.

Start Bio as soon as possible. If you get it out of the way early, you’ll have time for upper-level courses that can be helpful on the MCAT, like genetics or Mammalian Physiology.

How am I supposed to decide what med schools I want so soon? BTW, I get credit for AP Physics for the entire series.

Biopsychology sounds like an interesting class – it’s also a good supplement for med school, isn’t it?

You don’t have to now (nor do you have to decide whether to take physics now unless your intended major does not accept the AP credit but does require physics). But you can check the pre-med requirements and AP credit policies of the various medical schools and make a list of which ones would require you to take physics in college if you apply to them, so that you know beforehand when you reach the point of having to decide.

UCB gives good advice. Just be aware that AP credit policies can and do change. You’ll need to update your list about once a year for it to be accurate.

Rice’s pre med advising used to have a list of which med schools accept which AP credits, but they’ve taken it down.

Only because there’s a brand new update (summer 2012) :)

The Cal schools are FINALLY beginning to see the light.
