Planning Sched: Lectures v. Discussions?

I am currently planning my schedule for the fall as an incoming freshman. I have a few questions on the differences between lectures and discussions.
lectures are the actual classes right? and discussions are optional?
and on the searchable schedule, it provides the discussion times...do we have to sign up for one along with the lecture at orientation? or do we just show up for discussion? and how do we know which discussion goes with which lecture?
thank you. i know my questions are a little confusing

Lectures are the actual classes, discussion sections are when TA’s either go over the material, do extra readings, assign hw, take quizzes, etc. etc.

So it depends on the class if discussion is optional or mandatory. You will find out from the syllabus or first day of class.

And yes, you will have to sign up with discussion along with lectures. The respective discussion sections are under their respective lectures.

thank you! one more question so if on the schedule it says lec A, then all the discussions under it until “lec B” are for lec A right?

yes that’s right
