Planning to transfer

Hey Everyone,

I made another thread at the transfers forum, but since I'm a premed student I might as well ask here.

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/showthread.php?t=296499 (the other thread I made)

Well basically I'm currently attending UPR in Rio Piedras. I'm a second year student with a GPA of 3.695. The classes I've taken and the grades I've gotten for them are in the other thread. The only EC I have that's worth mentioning is judo 6 hours per week. I haven't taken the SAT(because they use different standardized tests here), and my HS GPA sucks(2.8).. but since I'd be applying as a Junior I'm hoping they won't give that much weight.

I come from a lower income hispanic family.. my mom dropped out of school in 8th grade and my dad has a technical degree in electronics.

The colleges I'm thinking about applying to are University of Michigan, University of Rochester, University of Miami, and Colgate University. I was hoping you guys could suggest me other colleges I could match with that are good for premed.. I don't really care about prestige.. as long as the college has good premed counseling, lots of research opportunities, no deflated grades, and high avrg MCAT for applicants I don't really care if its an Ivy or a State school.

Well.. I'm pretty much hoping for some last minute suggestions before I send out my apps. Please don't suggest any colleges in the south.. the times I've been in southern states I've felt very alienated so I wouldn't like to live there.

btw.. I emailed UMiami, and URochester and both said I'd be very competitive within their applicants pool.

So no suggestions? :(

I'm guessing the college I should be hoping to get into is URochester right?

How does Colgate compare to URochester for premed?

I was thinking about applying to Cornell too, but it seems like a waste of time, and money considering the fact that I probably won't get in...

I'm really just hoping for a few other college options, and opinions on the list I got going. I think I'm scratching UMich off of my list because I emailed them almost a week ago, and they have yet to answer...

meh.. 84 views and no comments..

rochester has a med school, so you may like that.
umich is a very good school, but also large.
however, colgate is a small liberal arts school, so classes are smaller and more intimate, so you may like that.
bottom line: visit and see which one you like better.

i attend University of Rochester, it is a very difficult premed. Prepare to study ALL the time.

UMichigan is very large and does not have particularly good premed counseling. It does have abundant research opportunities. While perhaps not deflated, they certainly don't have inflated grading either.

Please read the sticky thread about choosing an undergrad college when going premed. You would be better served to not worry about colleges that are "good in premed" or those with a "high avrg MCAT". Almost any school in the nation offers the premed courses you need to take, and the stats on MCAT scores and med school acceptance are very skewed and not particularly good indicators of a good place to do premed.

Rather than large schools, I'd recommend looking at smaller LACs where you are likely to get more attention with your studies and counseling.

"UMichigan is very large and does not have particularly good premed counseling. It does have abundant research opportunities. While perhaps not deflated, they certainly don't have inflated grading either"

so true lol...it is huge and the counselors...can I say suck any louder?
