I'm posting this here so more people can see this (rather than in the college majors forum). Anyways, I want to become a plastic surgereon but am not sure what an appropriate major for an aspiring plastic surgeon would be in an undergraduate school such as UCLA's. I have thought thus long and through, so I am quite sure that being a plastic surgeon is what I want to do. Any other extra information on becoming a plastic surgeon would also be helpful.

you have to go through med school like everyone else.

I'm also thinking about joining this path.
I have heard that it's better to take a major in which does not relate to biology because medschool admissions like the idea of students, not all focused on biology.

But if you really like Biology, you should take it. But remember that many med school wanabes will take it too and that they are competitve and smart and that you will need As on everything.

Keep it in mind that if you take a music major, and get A's, you'll have a better chance than someone who took a Bio major, and got Bs,Cs.

I'm looking at neuroscience also so I might take that as a major and psychology as a minor. Or Psychology as a major.. i dunno.

I prefer to call it, cosmetic surgery lol. Plastic makes me think of transforming ugly women into barbie dolls :s

Hmm..... so what are you doing? ;)

i was talking to the head surgeon of the ICU at the hospital where i'm interning (phew!) and she was explaining to me just how intricate becoming a plastic surgeon is - i wanna be one too, btw

first, you have to go to undergrad school and do relatively well (she said that part wasn't hard, but couldn't say) - 4 yrs; then, go to med school (also not difficult she says; i think i was starting not to believe her at that point) - 4 yrs; then get your surgery residency - 3yrs - and then a specialization in plastics - 2yrs or so.

maybe i'm missing something in there, but she did the math for me (we may be off a year or two) and since i'm 17 now, we figured i'd be around 33 by the time i'm through with alllll that schooling. yuck. but i'm still interested

anyway, i'll ask her next time what to major in, but i think it's open to anything as long as you've got the core premed courses in there

If you're interested in cosmetic surgery check out Dr. 90210 on the E! channel. I'm not interested in it, but that show is one of my favorites. It gives a very intimate look into not only the patient-side of cosmetic surgery but also the doctor side. The guy the show is mainly focused on is Dr. Rey and he is one of the busiest plastic surgeons in the world. He also went to Harvard Medical School.

It doesn't matter what your major is, but you need to complete pre med science courses to even apply to med school. After med school you apply for internships and then resident positions. Many, many people want plastic surgery (because of excellent money and not having to del with insurance companies as often) so only the best are chosen.

i love how panicked i can get about applying to med school when i still have a month or two before i can even download most undergrad apps

I just finished a week of shadowing plastic surgeons at a major hospital. If you have any questions about the actual profession versus schooling, feel free to ask.

my question is: what young buddhist becomes a plastic surgeon?

to filmxoxo,
in answer to your first question, i'd wouldnt be creating them into big boobied, orange fake tanned, blonde bimbos.
The reason why I am thinking about cosmetic surgeory is to give people that self-confidence they didn't really feel that they had. I love extreme makeover! Even if most of them turned worse after the makeover, they had that happiness that glowed from the inside which was truly beautiful <3

i can't answer for young buddhist, but a large reason why i became interested in plastic surgery in the first place was because i saw this news special about how a plastic surgeon did facial reconstruction for a burn victim.

so there are several non-bimbo uses for plastic surgery

Actually "cosmetic" is a worse name, since it implies that it is concerned with superficial beauty - kind of like permanent makeup. Erasing middle-aged women's crows feet around their eyes is a pretty shallow way to spend all that training.

"Plastic" in the medical sense doesn't mean fake or made from hydrocarbon plastics; it means maleable or changeable.

Probably the best name is reconstructive surgery, or it's more common name: plastic and reconstructive surgery, which is correcting major disfigurements due to birth defects, cancer, burns, injuries, etc. If you practice that kind of medicine you will be truly helping those in need instead of just making tons of money off the vanity of rich people.

Plastic surgery is extermely extermely competitive. it is one of the hardest specialities in medicine. basically you have 4 year hs, 4 yrs med school, and then i think almost 8 years residency or fellowship. i think a good major would be something you'll score really well in. if your good at science major in that. good luck
