We don’t have a box spring but have a hybrid mattress with inner spring and a latex topper. It’s a great mattress. Got it at IKEA. I do like the spring in the mattress.
The bed is not what I think of as a true platform. It’s an IKEA Hemnes bed. It’s not super tall though.
I will never go back to a box spring. I love our memory foam mattress. I can turn over and not disturb my husband. And the warranty on it is longer than on our old bed.
A little off topic…but where are you folks getting true box springs? The kind with springs in them. Around here, you get a foundation that looks like a box spring but it is really a platform foundation for the mattress.
It’s been some time since we have bought a bed and all the fixings for ourselves! When you used the word foundation I was like “hmm, is that something different?”
I also wondered about getting a hybrid mattress like @Sweetgum mentioned.
Gonna check out what Costco has online.
Yes it is. Box springs had…springs. These foundations are just that…a box that looks like a box spring but it’s really just a box…and you put your mattress on top of it.
We got those roll up bed in a box mattresses like Lucid or Caspar for our kids and a foundation/box-no-spring. They love them but I like the spring in my mattress. The foundation we got from Amazon. It’s a brand called Zinus. You can just search on Zinus box spring and it should pop up so you know what’s out there now. It is box shaped. It does not spring.
The mattress is the most important thing to me. IKEA doesn’t make the specific kind we have any more (Sultan) but I would go lie down on all the ones they currently have and buy from them again. I would not go to a mattress store again. Too much sales pressure. We looked in a few of those when we were looking for the young adults and it was not a pleasant experience. They ended up picking Lucids from Target.
We’ have a metal bed frame. The slat base can be set at two optional heights. Originally we had both a box spring and standard spring mattress. When we last changed mattresses, we raised the frame, and it acts more like a platform bed, with a spring mattress plus a separate 2" foam topper. We also added a sheet of plywood between the frame slats and the mattress to better distribute the weight. Overall, the mattress is slightly lower than when we had a box spring, but not by much since the base platform could be raised.
The manufacturer of ours is no longer in business. Here is one company with more modern styles. I do not see any that can be adjustable like ours, but there are numerous height options. Modern & Contemporary Beds | AllModern
I’m sure there are companies making latex mattresses. You can also get a latex foam topper for any type of a mattress. One of our guest beds was too hard, so we ordered one such topper. Good stuff.
We have a platform bed and use a mattress with no box springs–It does have a headboard and a footboard. I think it’s comfortable. I don’t remember what mattress we bought.
You all are making me feel more confident. Maybe some extra reinforcement if needed with the slats (or whatever the configuration for a specific platform has). A good deep mattress.
Our current bed (the one from Dania eons ago) is configured in a bit weird way but we like it. We took out the slats leaving the bed frame as just a frame when we got a new Tempur that came with a “free” box support. It would have been too much for us to have such a pyramid for a bed! We nested the box support from our Tempur into the frame so it sits on the floor within the frame. We recently bought a new mattress but kept the configuration. The new mattress went on top of the box. It worked out great height wise for us.
ETA: can’t find any pics of our bed as it is old but this looks very similar!
We have had a platform bed with drawers underneath our whole marriage. (the first joint new piece of furniture). I love the drawers underneath. Last mattress we got was a “hybrid” with more springs inside and a soft top. We now have that configuration on all 3 beds in the house. We hadn’t heard of the hybrid mattress, but it sure works once we knew about it.
