Playing a sport?

How hard would it be to play a sport for UT and balance academics as well?

How does college sports work? Are there different levels (like JV/Varsity in high school)?

Can someone just kinda give me an overview of what to expect when playing a sport for the school, and what steps i would need to take to express my interest in playing a sport (when do tryouts usually start, etc) ?

EDIT: I was thinking about Tennis specifically.

I’m not an athlete but most athletes as far as I know don’t major in intensive majors such as engineering or science. However, there are many athletes who are enrolled in honors programs and do major in business.

From what I know (I had a classmate who was a golfer and another was a diver) you get a tutor and have mandatory study hall. The UT athletics staff will go out of its way to make sure you get all the help you need so don’t sweat it and good luck!

Im pretty sure tennis isnt as demanding as football or basketball. SO you’ll be fine, but you will have to make the team. And yes their are different levels like JV/V.

Contrary to what FrenchBoy stated, there are no JV/Varsity levels in UT athletics.

As for how to express your interest in Tennis, you should contact the Tennis coaching staff when you arrive on campus to inquire as to when walk-on tryouts will occur. Each sport typically has tryouts, but you will need to confirm this with the coaches.

If you make the team, expect your afternoons/early evenings to be taken up with practice and film watching. When the season begins, you will not only have practice, but you will also travel extensively. In season, athletes typically take only 12 hours of coursework because of time constraints. However, as AAli mentioned, the Athletics department does have a wonderful tutoring service, led by Dr. Randa Ryan, with tutors assigned to each student-athlete.

Here is a good place to start to review the coaching staff and get contact info:
