Playing guitar in dorm?

Hey i am senior right now and i am so excited about the college life!
Some people say college was the best experience that they ever had...
some say college was disastrous just because "my roommate was such a jerk..."

...and yes, as a upcoming freshman in college
I do not want to vex my roommate very much.

But the thing is that I am the leader of heavy metal band
so I NEED to practice and play guitar in dorm.

So here is my question for all of you: will you get annoyed if you hear some
strong heavy metal in your dorm?

And if you do, how can i solve this conflict?

btw thanks for sparing time to read.

See if the college you are going to attend has practice rooms available in the music department.

Use headphones.

Understand that compromise is key to dorm living. It’s not OK for one person to disturb an entire dorm because of noise (music, singing, whatever). I’m sure you can find a way to practice without bothering the rest of the dorm.

There’s a kid in my dorm who plays his guitar very loudly in the center of our quad, so EVERY room can hear it. And he only plays at midnight, when those of us with 8am classes would very much like to sleep. So I can say with truth that, yes, an entire dorm WILL hate you if you practice there. Like nysmile suggested, try the music building.

Ha, I tried practicing the trumpet in the dorms once…I’ve learned that people don’t like it :p. Ever since I’ve stashed it away in my closet.

Some kid in another building plays the saxaphone all the time, or so I’ve heard. People are not very happy with him lol.

If you play it outside of quiet hours, and not super loudly then I myself wouldn’t mind. If you play it during quiet hours without headphones then I’d mind very much.

This question applies to me too.

Just turn your amp down.

Read your housing license carefully…our dorms don’t allow amplified instruments or drums.

I would agree with the music building idea.

Yeah. Even if it’s technically allowed, don’t do it.

Personally, I’d rather practice in the music hall than in my room anyhow. I’m more focused. And besides, some of the sounds made during practice are not that pretty, and I would rather my friends hear me perform at a recital as opposed to doing my weird creaky warmups.

I would find someplace else to practice or use headphones if you intend to plug in an electric guitar. A girl down the hall from me plays bongo drums and acoustic guitar and we are incredibly annoyed. You can hear it even on other floors.

It’s a little tricky, because sometimes it is not disturbing and sometimes it is. If you played the violin it probably wouldn’t bother people so much, but the electric guitar, or any kind of shrill wind or loud reed or bass instrument is going to bother people. Since you will have to play heavy metal guitar, I would definitely find another place to practice, or else get headphones you can plug into your amp, or else get used to playing your amp very quietly. Your dorm may have a basement room that’s a little more insulated from the rest.

Another option would be to play without the amp, if you already have a song written and you just need to practice it so that you hit all the chords right.

I’d probably recommend headphones. If your amp has a headphone jack, that, or perhaps a line 6 pod of some sort. They’re pretty good, and only run like 200-300 used, or even less if you get a pocket pod or one of the newer small ones they have.

Haha, yes, Line 6 POD ftw :D

Well, sort of. I’d really like to buy an Axefx, but those are super expensive and hard to find.
