Hey Guys,

I have been playing the violin for about 4 years and I recently stopped about a year and a half ago, but I still play for fun (i.e: when I am stressed out) but not seriously (i.e: recitals). Can I still count this as an extracurricular or will it just annoy the Admissions Officers?

Thank You

Do you play in any ensembles or small (even casual) orchestras? In my opinion, if it’s something you love doing and regularly spend time doing, it’s an extra-curricular. You don’t have to compete or publicly perform, as long as you enjoy it - and actually do it.

But that’s just my opinion, and I don’t know too much about your specific situation.

The most important thing, whether you could violin as an extra-curricular or not, is that you continue to play if you enjoy it! :)

Thank you… i really do enjoy playing it!

My rising college freshman is a piano player. He stopped his ensemble class his junior year in HS to take another AP. He still plays for pleasure and put it as an EC. My rising HS junior is a violin player and is also stopping ensemble this year in favor of an AP. He will still put it as an EC on his apps.

Mention whatever school group you were in when you played in school and give the years.

I appreciate the feedback BUandBC! I will defo do that!

I stopped playing in my school’s orchestra in the 11th grade. However, I continued to participate in a variety of events (pit orchestras for musicals, visiting nursing homes with musical groups, etc.) where I was required to play, so I put it down as an extracurricular. If the violin continues to be a part of your life (i.e. you devote significant time to practicing it and such), then put it down.
