Plazas

Out of all the plazas, which do most people prefer. I believe the top 3 are Terrace, Vista, and De Neve. I'm planning to request a change, but I would like to know how I would rank them on the housing chance form? Thanks in advance!

I personally wanted De Neve as did most of my UCLAbound. I haven't seen all the dorms in person, but I walked by a lot of them and I remember thinking "Wow, I'd love to live there" when I walked by De Neve. I also had dinner in their commons or restaurant or w/e y'all want to call it. I thought it was very spacious and they had a great assortment of food, I finally understood the whole freshman 15! My friends and I had so much ice cream and hot chocolate for dessert we were going to explode haha. But the long walk uphill to our host's apartment burned it off haha.

i love living in de neve!
but as for the food, do keep in mind you can eat anywhere on the hill. i know that a lot of people come to de neve because it's open the latest for dinner (although i think it switches with covel).
in any case, IMO a plaza is a plaza. the riebers will be the most social of those three, because they have bigger floors. but de neve is the closest to campus.
however, i can't think of anything horribly wrong with ANY of the plazas. aside from summit being so far up the hill, and sunset being kind of... deathly quiet... but hey, all the plazas have their pros/cons.
are you trying to change inTO a plaza, or from one plaza to another? what year are you? if you're just trying to pick a "better" dorm i'm not confident they'd do that for you...

There's a form on the housing site. I'm trying to change from Rieber Hall to a plaza as a freshman

if you haven't got a legitimate reason, i don't think you have a huge chance. and i know a LOT of people from my high school were in rieber hall this year. of the halls, i'd say it has the best location (when considering campus AND proximity to food). obviously dykstra is closest to campus, but not to b-caf, rendezvous, rieber dining hall, covel, and puzzles.
so if it doesn't work out, you'll still be in a good place. but good luck! :)

Yeah no kidding. It's impossible to eat health here!

Terrace, Vista, and De Neve.

The first two are some of the newest dorms on campus. It's a bit different from De Neve in the sense that you experience a more diverse bubble (with the restaurants available and the proximity to other dorms). People in De Neve are in their own bubble with the Dykstra kids. (Dykstra is right behind one of the De Neve buildings.) Food is just downstairs. Crossroads (a fast-food restaurant run by UCLA) is next door. Plus, it is the closest to campus.

Hi Emmeline,
Alot of my friends got DeNeve. I got Summit. Are we ever going to see each other and what's the dinning like at Hedrick?

Hey chappa,

Personally, I don't like Hedrick [food]. I know people who do though. They have sushi (which is usually some sort of CA roll or sushi salad) a couple of days a week.

You'll see each other if you make the effort? Summit is near Rieber Terrace and Vista... you guys will not run into each other.

IMO, De Neve Dining is one of the best dining halls... along with Covel Commons. (You'll get to know the dining hall names later on... don't sweat this so much yet.)

thanks E...I kind of like California rolls but hopefully there's some other choices. Do the dining halls have lots of options or do you have to hunt for the food you want at the different locations....and is summit like being sent to siberia or do people like it up there?...it sure sounds like it's far away from everyone else....

Hey chappa, I didn't mean to make it sound as if Summit was Siberia-like.

Go ahead and look at this map: http://www.fm.ucla.edu/CampusMap/Campus.htm

Click on Northwest. You'll see the dorm locations.

Yes, the dining halls have a lot of options... To give you an idea of what they offer:
http://ha.ucla.edu/menu/menu.cfm
http://map.ais.ucla.edu/portal/site/UCLA/menuitem.789d0eb6c76e7ef0d66b02ddf848344a/?vgnextoid=b342064a9a7d1010VgnVCM1000008f8443a4RCRD

Be wary of the more exotic sounding names... it's not as exciting as it sounds. :p

Do you have to hunt for food? Well, the dining commons all have the same burgers, fries, and pizza (to varying degrees of quality/taste). They usually have some same common ground with desserts although I think Covel Commons has a wider range of pastries/cakes offered. Otherwise, each of the dining commons usually has some sort of distinct set of dishes that separate themselves from the others. I think this is described somewhere in http://www.dining.ucla.edu

So yeah, check the menus. Find out what you might like and go for it?

This question makes the different residential areas seem like islands. :)

So, is it true they operate like islands or are they close enough together that everyone goes back and forth alot between them?

To be honest, the dorms aren't that far away from each other. Hedrick to De Neve takes about 3-5 minutes.

It's just that once you get to college, you tend to get realllly lazy. xD

I'm looking at a map and see where the Hedricks are. Is there some kind of foot path or staircase straight to school or do you get there by going by DeNeve. What's the walking like?

Fiction: The residential areas are islands. You will need an alternate form of transportation to reach other destinations.

Reality: As Jinobi says, Hedrick -> DeNeve is about 5 minutes, but 5-10 minutes vice versa. But some people are lazy to walk up. Either way, if you want to meet up with someone in Hedrick, you will have to use something called "effort", unfortunately.

Hitch, though .. I would never walk there even for $$.

From De Neve, you cross the street and enter Bruin Walk. Bruin Walk is a super busy pathway that goes from where you started at De Neve to the rest of campus (maybe ending near Franz? IDK). It divides the campus neatly into South Campus (math/science majors) and North Campus (...everyone else).

What's the walking like? The campus is very hilly.

So it sounds like you have to go by De Neve everytime you go to Hedricks? Would you use the sidewalk along the car roadway to the top of the hill after you past De Neve or is there a shortcut of somekind?

Well, you can take the sidewalk along the car roadway every time to get to Hedrick. That way, its a gently sloping hill. Or, you could take the all-stairs route that goes from Rieber Turnaround, to the back of Rieber, and then to the back of Hedrick.

Note 1: There is an elevator that goes from the tennis courts to De Neve, thus bypassing the portion of the Hill that goes from the IM Fields to De Neve.

And BoelterHall: Hey, at least I have toned calves from having to walk up the Hill AND walk up 2 flights of stairs to my 3rd floor Hitch suite (Hitch don't have elevators. That makes moving in fun.)

thanks Jinobi....it sounds like getting up to your Hitch 3rd floor is a longer hike that getting to a room in Summit and there's nothing wrong with toned calves!

Ok So I am living in the De Neve dorms and I am an art student first year...I am a REALLY social person and am a little bit stressed that I am not going to have any friends next year now that i've read through all these posts. Will I be on a floor or room with people that aren't freshmen? Even though I am in De Neve will I still be able to hang out in the res halls? Am I completely missing out on my frehsman expierience now?
