Please, advice!

Hi! I'm new here.

I decided to work on my transfer to UC from my community college.

I have total 60.5 units GPA 4.0, and from that total 29.5 units are transferable to UC (IGETC) same GPA 4.0, the other 30 units are business classes and are not transferable to UC but count toward my AS in Business. If everything goes well, I'll get my AS by the end of this Fall.

The thing is I need to complete other 13 classes to fulfill the IGETC. And my counselor said I need to take 9 units this summer (College Algebra, Macroeconomics, Art history, not art, but Art history).

The next Fall 13: Calculus I, English 1RA, Microeconomics, History (13 units)

The next Spring 14: Calculus II, English 1RB, CS, Adm of Justice (13 units)

The next summer 14: Business stats (3 units)

The next Fall 14: Psych and Chemistry (7 units)

The next Spring 15: no classes

Is she right? Does her plan sound reasonable?

If I plan to do UCD-TAG, they will reject me because actually I would not be a F/T student, summer 14 (3 units) and Fall 14 (7 units). She didn't mention this F/T condition for TAG, I found out after reading UCD Tag.

I always take 9 to 10 units per semester because I'm an older student and have things to do at home. Now I'm also working at school and getting paid :). Before working for money I did two internships (private firm & federal).

My counselor talked to me like I have no chances, like I'm a failure. According to her, my internships are not relevant. As I said, I'm an older student, I'm a ESL student, and my CCC is the first school I've ever attended in the US. All is new to me. I didn't know what a scranton was! :P

Do P/T students have a chance at UCB or UCD (no TAG), or they only admit F/Timers? I need to balance school with home. I have to commute to school. I can't pick other schools because I can't move as I need to take care of family and home.

I asked her about Spring 2015, what to do (since no classes), but she didn't reply my email. She ignored me. She put a lot of class in the beginning and in later semesters it's lighter, but what about Spring 2015?

I'd like to keep my P/Timer pace, in this case I'd take classes during Spring 2015 also instead of choking with 13 units during Fall 14 and Spring 14.

I don't like her advice, I'd like to redesign it, but either her plan or my plan my target is Fall 2015.

Who is right? Is her plan a good advice? I'm planning my next two years and I'm paying for each credit and book. I don't have fin aid.

Thank you very much! I'd appreciate any advice!

For UCD TAG, you only have to be a full time student the Spring semester before you apply for TAG, which in your case is Spring 2014. If you are full time then, they you can do TAG. I don’t know whether the UCs prefer FT vs PT, I think it’s mostly that you have your classes done. I guess you could not take classes over the summer, and then push everything back so you have classes to take Spring 2015, so you’ll always be full time.

Your counselor sounds absolutely incompetent. If she talks to you condescendingly during your appointments you should probably consult someone else, ESPECIALLY if you think she’s misguiding you.

As for your actual concern: Have you taken a life science? It looks like you’re missing that. You’ll need a lab as well. It might help if you give us a list of what you have taken! c:

EDIT: UCD says this about P/T TAG students:
"Who is eligible for a TAG?

Domestic and international students who are enrolled full time at any California community college spring 2012 through spring 2013 are eligible for a UC Davis fall 2013 TAG—part-time enrollment is permissible for good cause. A TAG may not be written for individuals who are working toward high school graduation and while simultaneously enrolled at a California community college and a four-year institution." ([UC Davis : TAG FAQ](Undergraduate Admissions))

Thank you for your replies!

I didn’t take any life science classes yet. Mostly business and management. Well, I think if I can’t be a full time student, I’ll just apply to Davis without TAG.

How hard is to be admitted into UCD without TAG? How do you find out if a major is impacted? I know For CSU east bay, Business is impacted, but where I can that info for UCB and UCD?

Thank you!

@oldienorcal UCB’s business program is definitely impacted and notorious for being highly selective, not sure about Davis but if I am not mistaken almost every UC’s business program is impacted due to a huge pool of applicants at least time.

UCB is a stretch no matter how high your stats + E.C’s are it’s just a numbers game. UCD doesn’t have an undergraduate business program, but you can major in economics / marginal economics there. I prefer tagging UCSD instead, their economics program is one of the best in California. From what I know for public schools, only UCR, UCLA, UCI, UCB have undergraduate business programs. Abandon your counselor and find one that cares about you and wants to help you. Without my counselor going over the classes with me, I would of probably taken multiple useless courses. I suggest using your time as efficiently as possible & take ONLY IGETC/Pre-reqs, I followed ASSIST.ORG.

You should see a different counselor, especially if she is talking down to you.

Like bellsie said, it looks like you need a life science and a science lab. I’m also not sure about your math series. In my district, you can’t go from College Algebra to Calculus. I had to take Trig to get into Pre-Calculus to get into Calculus. Maybe that was just my district, but I would check pre-reqs on that.

Find another counselor to talk to. I have had horrible counselors in the past (having a different student’s records instead of mine and telling me all kinds of wrong information) but I kept trying different ones until I could get better information. Use assist.org. It is very helpful. Focus mainly on your IGETC and your pre-reqs.

You can still TAG P/T. Davis just wants to know why you were not full time. I was P/T for the last 2 years, working + major illness. I explained it in my TAG app and my TAG was approved. Davis’ TAG is the only instance I know where you have to be full time. Outside of that, I don’t think the UCs care if you are P/T.

UC Davis has some ridiculous prerequisites for man. economics though.

Only Berkeley, UCI, and UCR have undergraduate business programs. All the other schools are hybrid programs. There is no downside to choosing business admin vs. bizEcon/Biz + accounting etc. but Berkeley is easily the best program.
