Ok here's the deal. I was told to write about something I'm passionate about on my personal statement so I wrote about my love for art and drawing for both essay prompts. My IB english teacher read it and said it was awesome. However, I'm not declaring an art major at any of the universities I'm applying to because my mom wants me to go into a science major. Would it affect my chance of getting accepted if I wrote about one subject and applied for a major not related to that subject at all?

No I don't think so. I wrote about my involvment in robotics even though I will not go into engineering in college. Colleges want to know what you do and how you do them. So you're fine.

No way. Colleges love it when you write about something you really do enjoy. It can have nothing to do with your major...I have a college essay book and a girl wrote to Harvard about how she loved different colored panties and when she was missing a pair or something and she was admitted :) Ha ha!

If you're not even required to write about something academic, why would you be penalized for writing about something academic that's not related to your major?

ooh. I have a similar predicament. What if my essay talks about a desire to have a profession in art, but I'm not applying as an art major to some of the colleges?

Phishy -

There are lots of art professions that don't require art majors, and some students are so talented/advanced/whatever that the art department at a given college may not have much in particular to offer them. Don't sweat this one.

My d wrote about her love of dance for a school that doesn't even have dance. She's there now, very happily (she finds dance elsewhere).

ah. I'm still worried it will look really strange if I say "I want to open a design firm one day!" when I'm applying for a pre-dentistry program. :|?

You're right - it will look weird. Why do you want to go pre-dental if you really want to open a design firm? Dentistry is too difficult to be a hobby.

Dude, You are in 12th grade, you don't decide your major until the end of your sophomore year and sometimes even juniors change their majors.

That particular college is apparently good for its pre-pharmacy and pre-dentistry programs. It's not my first choice college and more of a match/safety. If I do end up there, I was thinking I would go on and study to become a dentist and support my art in that way. Just a more "practical" viewpoint, I guess.

If I'm accepted into pre-dental, I'm pretty sure my area of study will be set. It's one of those accelerated programs. UC's require that you decide on a major freshman year, or so I'm told.

I guess I'll have to work out a new essay by tonight. Thanks for all the input!

ohhh that's awesome! now i'm less worried. thanks guys!
