Please answer, Is it really hard to get good grades in this university?

Hi,
I was accepted to Binghamton University (Class of 2017, Fall 2013) last month and I was still considering if I want to go to Binghamton University. Since I wasn't a GREAT student, I really want to at least try to transfer to the schools I wasn't able to get in. (U of Minnesota, U of Wisconsin)
So, of many reasons, getting good GPA is very important to my situation.
Is it really true that what people say about Binghamton university? Very strict about giving grades?
How hard is it to get 3.8 by end of my freshmen year if I take only general requirement classes?

Please help me, this is very important choice of my life.

Hi! My name is Rob and I’m a Binghamton University Student Ambassador.

Binghamton’s courses are definitely academically rigorous. In order to get high grades, you have to put in work and study. We don’t offer “easy As”. It is very possible to maintain a high GPA, though. I’m a freshman and I had a 4.0 my first semester. I’m on track for As in all my classes this semester except Linear Algebra (an upper-level course), where I’m on the fence between an A and a B. That comes from putting in the work to learn the course material.

So the answer to your question is: it depends. If you try to skate by without studying or doing the recommended homework, it would be extremely difficult to get high grades - even if you were able to make due with not studying in high school, like many students (myself included). If you come prepared to put in the work and study until you learn all of the material being taught, then it is very possible to maintain a high GPA. Many of our students do it, including myself.

Let me know if you have any other questions!

What I was worried is not being able to get good grades after hard works. Do you know average gpa of psychology majors?
How long do you spend time on only studying including homeworks

Rob isn’t being completely truthful when he says there are no “Easy A’s”. Many classes students skate by and get free As. But yeah, it depends largely on what courses you take. If you take physics, do not expect an A. If you take Pop, Rock, and Soul, you will get an A.

I understand that PSCH. 101 is tough and you really have to put in the work to be in the A, A- range.

Metroid9824: I can only speak from my own experience at the university, which hasn’t included many general education courses. None of my classes have been easy A’s, but I have been taking fairly difficult classes (Calculus 1/2, Linear Algebra, economics courses, Latin 1/2, etc.)

Skim0031: I do not have any information regarding average GPAs for psychology majors, unfortunately. I typically spend 5-8 hours per week total studying and doing homework for all my classes combined, but I’ve always tended to study much less than my peers. I know many of my friends spend an hour out-of-class studying for every hour in class, especially in science courses. That’s generally a good rule of thumb, in my opinion.
