Please answer my question

I am from india and i just got my sat scores.Ok so i am pretty bummed i got just a 1840 on my sat. I was hoping to get better scores so that i get a good scholarship. My superscore comes at 1970. The question is, is it possible for me to get scholarships from universities with these scores? My extracurricular activities are mainly sports. I represented my state in nationals. I was an exchange student to usa and went to high school there and played american football and tennis (i played varsity). I have been playing american football here in india as well and i represent a team at the national level. Please let me know if you have any doubts in the question

How much can you pay each year for four years?

First of all, relax. When my kid took the SAT for the first time as a junior, she got an 1870. She could literally not believe it because until then, she had been an amazing test taker and she expected way higher. But she took it again…and then took the ACT (and got a 33 on her first try) and eventually was accepted to 12 of the 14 colleges where she applied…some of them top 20 universities.

What year are you now? Rising senior?

Yes but in india the senior year has already started. Was it 1870 that got her into the colleges or the act? I am really worried. I wanted a scholarship and i feel like the chances are really slim with these scores

I would bet that the higher ACT score was what got this student into the colleges of her choice.

What were your CR and Math SAT score?

Do you plan to retake the SAT?

How much financial aid do you need to attend college in the United States? What are your options in India?

The june sat i got 650 in math and 620 min CR…i am assuming around 10 to 15k

You only need $10,000 to $15,000 a year to attend college?

Does this mean your parents can pay $30,000 a year for you to attend college here…or more?

Have you tried for a tennis scholarship? Contact the tennis team coach at the colleges you want to attend and see what is available. No sports scholarships at Ivy or Div 3 schools, but many really good colleges do award them, and I think you’ve realized that your current scores are a long shot for Ivies.

Yes my parents can take a loan of about that much…what are my chances of getting that much of financial aid?

You said you wanted financial aid of about $15000 and your parents can take a loan for about that much. Well, tuition and cost of attendance are a lot more than that ($40-70K), and as an international your parents probably won’t be offered any loans from US banks. I think you are saying your family can only pay $15000 per year and that they will need a loan for that amount. THAT’s a different situation, and it’s going to be hard to find something.

You should look at the list of schools pinned at the top of this section that offer automatic scholarships, and then look through those for matches with your statistics AND that don’t require you to be a citizen for the scholarships. You will not find the most selective schools on that list, but a lot of fine schools. There is also a list of school for under $25k, and you might be able to get a scholarship from one of those, making the total cost to you between $10-15k. However, you still need to find loans on your own as an international student.

So, is it possible to get scholarships with those stats? Yes, but you are going to have to look at all kinds of schools and opportunities, not just at highly ranked schools.

@aryan2013 are you saying your parents will take loans of more than $30,000 a year for you to attend college? Can they pay any of these costs without taking out loans?

I will say…for four years, you are looking at more than $100,000 in loans if all of the remaining cost above scholarships is to be funded with loans. That is TOO MUCH in loan debt for an undergraduate degree.

Tennis in not a fully funded sport, only 4.5 scholarships at most for men for a team of 8-12. Some universities have less than than (may have 2 to be divided between entire team, or zero). Tennis scholarship highly unlikely unless you have a national presence, competition, and ranking - high school tennis won’t do it. There may be some really low level D1 teams where there could be some money but it would take some research as they aren’t well known schools from a popular sense. And to get any decent money you have to come in playing high in the line-up, or show a ton of promise and be prepared to make that commitment. There’s a lot of players that start with 10% and books and that’s it.

CADREAMIN, sometimes you have to start looking for scholarships somewhere, and a 10% scholarship is better than nothing. A sports scholarship can be stacked with other merit scholarships too. OP asked if he could get scholarships with those scores, and of course the answer is yes, but not at highly selective schools so right off the bat he’s not looking at Stanford or USC for any kind of a scholarship, tennis or academic. Some lower D1 ranked (in tennis, not in academic rankings) might be a good fit, and if he can get $5-10k as a tennis scholarship, why not? D2 is also a good option for some.

OP needs to provide more information on where he’s looking for schools, what he’s going to study, and answer the question of whether his parents are going to borrow only $10k per year or $30k. I think it would be harder for him to get a loan for $10k in the US than to get a tennis scholarship for that amount. He needs to find an academic match with merit aid, and then find another hook for more money. Sport could be it.

Totally get your point twoinandone. Tennis is better to help a student get in a school than get money if you are a low level player which he sounds like. Point was high school is not the feeder system into college tennis like other sports, if all you are doing is playing high school tennis, you aren’t getting a scholarship, and the fact he also plays football tells me a lot about his tennis. It is like golf, very few spots - not like football or baseball with tons of spots and money. Many lower ranked D1 schools don’t fund scholarships. Vanderbilt, no slacker in the rankings, has 2 scholarships total. The top 2-3 guys get those, the rest are lucky to get in the school. A school like Davidson has 1, that’s it. If he was a girl, another story, they fund all 8 thanks to Title IX. I don’t think he will get a response from coaches, so I think his time could be spent better with another focus, maybe football, they have a boat load of scholarships at most schools that have football. I have no idea about the level for football.
