I have an interesting situation because as a freshman and sophomore in high school, I got just OK grades (a mixture of A's and B's). I probably shouldn't mention this when I apply, but I had a severe case of manic depression during these years and believe it or not it's almost a miracle I performed as well academically as I did. I had a very severe case and was not medicated...However, now I am completely fine, I am on the right medication and I haven't had a setback in quite a while. If I could go back in time, I would give absolutely anything to be able to perform to the best of my ability, which certainly I was not able to do (when I'm working to my fullest, I am a straight A/A+ student).

Have I completely ruined my chances for an Ivy League or other top school? I am going into my junior year, and planning to get straight A's, good SATs, I am editor-in-chief of the school paper, started a table tennis club, started and am president of the drama club, studied at top drama academies in NYC (Lee Strasberg, Stella Adler), and am very devoted to a volunteer organization in my neighborhood (200+ hours). I also took a trip to Nicaragua with a volunteer group, studied at Cambridge University, and plan on doing either TASP or a Yale Drama Program next summer. I also regularly submit my writing pieces to publications and contests. (I am planning to double major in drama/english). I am very close with my teachers/guidance counselor as well and plan to get great recs.

I will always be devastated by the grades I earned the last two years...I could have done so much better but was really unable to do so because of the situation. Now, however, I am ready to hit the ground running and become the outstanding student I"m meant to be. Do you think I've completely ruined my chances for the schools I want to go to? (Dartmouth, Bowdoin, University of Chicago, Columbia, Amherst, Wesleyan, Oberlin, etc.)

btw my courseload for next year is..
AP Lang
AP Bio
AP Psychology
AP American History
Journalism
Pre-Calculus
Honors French

You SHOULD mention your state of manic depression in the “extenuating circumstances” section as long as you were actually diagnosed. Not only do would you have a good trend, you could explain it as well. For your intended major and ECs, you should have a good shot at the ivies.
