Hey guys,
I have a question.
I am a junior and I have been working hard.
I am applying early admission.
Once I submit my application, can I start slacking off (2nd Semester of my senior year)?
because I am supposed to apply by October/December.

I am thinking that once I submit the application, I wouldn't have to work as hard.
But my brother says they keep checking your grades even after you have submitted your application.
Can the colleges reject you even after they accept you because you started to slack off?

No, you can't slack off and yes colleges will continue to check your grades. It is possible to have your admission rescinded after you've been accepted.

but my teachers are saying that the 2nd Semester Senior year is just a matter of pass or fail.
I am not going to slack off big time but it's just that I go to Westwood High...a really competitive school.
I my GPA drops from 3.8 to 3.7, that means my rank will go down at least 20 places, no kidding.
So is it okay if I get 87 instead of 96??

wait until you're accepted before you slack off, trust me. because you just might not get in. and 96 to 87 is kind of a big drop. at least stay around the same area.

When you apply early, you are never 100% sure that you will get in. I definitely would not slack off for that reason because if you don't get in, you will have to apply to other schools who will see the grade drop.

The best response is don't slack off. But it's a well known fact that for many people it happens. I'll admit it, I'm slacking off- but I am making sure my grades don't get much lower than low A's. If you do slack off, make sure it's after you know that you've gotten in, and you hear the requirements your school has. I can't get below a 3.2 GPA or any failing grades, so I'm making sure that I don't. Just be smart about it.

Oh, so they have a requirement that you have to maintain specific GPA in order to get in. I was talking about once I get admitted.
Like slacking off in February.

How about you just keep on working hard to maintain your grades?

I slacked off 3rd quarter and got crappy grades. During the last week of that quarter, I realized that I just couldn't let my grades slip like that, and started working hard to bring them up.

Trust me, you don't want to go through that, so please continue to keep your grades up. You have all summer to chill.

I know you'll be exhausted when February comes by (I definitely was!), but it simply isn't worth it to slack off.

I slacked off somewhat. Your acceptance may give you a gpa requirement or just say something along the lines of, "we expect you to graduate successfully" which is somewhat ambiguous depending on how they mean successfully. (The latter is what mine said.) So no, don't get D's but as long as you don't get too many C's you should be fine.

Me being a 2nd semester senior, I can provide u with good insight on this question.

You can slack somewhat, but not to the extreme point of getting C's, D's, and F's in all your classes.

For me, I'm only doing bad in 1 class, AP Calc, not cause I'm slacking, but cause it's a hard class for me.

What my school does is for any A- average you have during your 2nd semester of senior year, you do NOT have to take the final exam. So that's why I haven't really slacked much.

I mean, I don't study as much, and don't care about my GPA anymore b/c I am in college, but I do care from the standpoint of ending the high school career well.

You don't want to build up the slacking off b/c it can carry into college as well.

It really depends on the school. I know that UChicago tends to go by the "unless you are failing out of school, we admitted you for good reason" policy. If your school will rescind your acceptance because of poor grades, then, of course, don't slack off. But I would check and keep an A average, or close enough to original scores.

My daughter was accepted ED to Lehigh, so she knew she was accepted even before the end of first semester. The school required a mid-year report. It also required a final transcript -- all schools do. Final transcripts show final grades.
Colleges won't see a difference in a 3.8 to 3.7 as any big deal.
That's not slacking. Cs, Ds, and Fs. Now that's slacking.

once you get in, i woud not recommend you dropping below straight B's...and yes, colleges will receive your 2nd semester grades, and if they deem that the drop in grades reflects poorly on your attitute to school and learning, you will get a very pleasant letter during the summer that says,

Dear ____________;

We regret to inform you that your acceptance has been revoked...

(not the actual letter, but the extent...get the idea? honestly if you're going to a good school, you'll have better work ethics than to completely slack off...as for a .1 drop in gpa? don't trip...as for one whole point drop...now that's something to be careful about)

I was accepted ED to Tufts, but I had worked hard all 1st semester anyway and got straight A's. However, I'll probably have a 3.66 this (2nd semester) of my senior year, and that was with slacking off. I don't know about your schools, but if you're in all AP's senior year, 4th quarter is incredibly easy and all review, so it's not hard to pull off a decent gpa...even slacking like me.
