Please be brutally honest about me getting into UT, want to go in for ece

Hi y’all

Bio

  • senior in high school
  • An out of state applicant (Washington)

My stats
(The bad side)

  • ACT 16/36 (composite (overall))
    math was 19
  • SAT 930/1600 (overall)
    math was 450 (I believe)
    GPA 3.3 (Un-weighted)
got kicked out of calculus, AP Chem (because they thought I would fail the course)

I hated my self for this :frowning:

(the good side)

  • I have a college professor letter of recommendation, from and old college i used to volunteer work for (he worked in the ece department)
    • I have learned how to solder, and still learning how to use tools
    • I have learned how to program
    • Now i am learning how to design a circuit board using cad software (and he told me that when you are a junior or senior in college you get to do this stuff)
  • I will be taking Calc AB through UT High school online
  • May also take statistics online as well (UT Austin High School)
  • Also plan to take AP-Bio online as well by independent study (For pre-med along side)
  • Currently in Psychology ( will take the AP test)
  • plan to take 7 AP Exams in May
  • did a lot of volunteer work over my three years in high school (even in the summer)
  • I also took some summer courses to get ahead in my subjects
  • plan to retake the SAT (aiming for 1400+) and the ACT (aiming for 30+)

Pleas be brutally honest, and i’m trying to work and get in, i know that from my peers and my counselors that i have a lot of potential and i work hard. But i’m having a hard time showing it.

Thanks y’all and once again hook em horn’s

0 chance.

but you go to uga tho

I guess you could go to a community college and try to transfer, but your high school record indicates zero chance for this fall.

It doesn’t matter what great scores you get on the APs this May, it’s too late. The college admissions decisions will have been made.

so, it’s October of your senior year and you are planning to retake both the SAT and ACT… are you signed up for these already? If not, you need to get a move on. Are you doing prep courses?

So far, your results are far behind your targets… “But i’m having a hard time showing it.” are your test taking issues related to anything like an LD that can be documented/accommodated?

As for UT (Austin) - with your current grades and scores, I agree with the previous commenter that you have no realistic chance. Actually, as an OOS applicant, you would need to have stellar numbers and ec’s to get UT to notice.

Why the Texas fixation? Do you have a plan B? and more importantly, have you discussed your plans with your parents, esp as it relates to financing school?

yeah i know ap scores dont matter. But what about taking ap classes

Texas is amazing, I know i have variety of other schools i will apply for. but Austin is a goal.

I think the best thing to do is go to a community college and transfer to UT or other great schools after two years. As a transfer, they won’t care about your high school GPA (usually true) or standardized test scores (ever).

I’ve never seen someone more than double their standardized test scores – which is what you’re aiming for. And even if you do, your GPA and lack of rigorous courseload will put you instantly in the “auto-reject” pile.

How many AP classes are you taking in your high school? You just mention psychology, plus some online classes and self study. Those don’t count. Given your track record, I just don’t think adcoms will believe you’re on track to make good scores on seven APs without a letter from your school.

Even if you are doing great in seven in-person AP classrooms, you’re just not understanding how tough UT is for OOS. Your tests and GPA are far too low.

I don’t go to UGA. My daughter does. She was auto admit to UT, got into business honors with a full tuition+ merit scholarship and was a 40 Acres finalist, so I know what I’m talking about. UT isn’t realistic for you.

Getting into UT as an out of state applicant is very hard. Getting into engineering is very hard. Your test scores are just not going to get you there. Reading last year’s threads on those who did and did not get in might be helpful to you.

Allrigtht yall

My gpa is not final (I will probably see at the end of the year if it change) i hope for it to become a 3.5 at least

I will retake the sat and act again and after December 9th it will be the last

My school does not offer much AP classes, and the ones i wanted to take are not offers and could not fit into my schedule, I also transfered from a new high school.

So maybe you guys tell me what states from oos can get you admitted into ece and UT

oh i was not trying to judge, Wow thats awesome, but what about engineering, I know it is the hardest for oss because Texas is towards Texas residents

16 to 30 ACT?
Based on the UT CDS https://utexas.app.box.com/v/CDS2016
GPA is not considered
Middle 50% ACT is 26-32
Fall 2016 Freshman profile: Out of state (domestic) students = 7% which is approx 600 students out of 8570 enrolled.

wow, so i just have to work a lot harder. i will give it a shoot as well. Thank you so much ccsouth. i will be honest i’m not in the top 6 percent in my high school (more like top quarter). And definitely I will work a lot harder. anything else i have to keep in mind for applying since im out of state?

You asked for the brutal truth. The brutal truth is that you have no chance. Your GPA is non-qualifying. Your ACT is non-qualifying. They don’t care if you know how to solder. You don’t have time to build a new high school record before applications are due.

The average ACT for out of state students is 31.
https://admissions.utexas.edu/explore/freshman-profile
For ECE it’s likely higher than the average.

You need to pick another school, or go to Austin Community College for a couple years then try to transfer.

Hi sir,

At this time I know I won’t get in, unless I change my score to a 31.

But what do you mean build a new high school record?

Allright y’all

So yeah I know with these stats I won’t get in. But I’m still wondering about the gpa thing aparently it is saything that it is unconsidered, but to replace that they want the class rank. So now what? And what if (sounds good right) I get my sat into the 1400 range and the act into the 32 range. And my gpa increase to 3.5 this semester (btw 3.5 is the honors gpa to graduate from my high school). Then what will be my chance now?

Sorry for asking to much, but this will be the last

Those are a lot of what if’s. ^^
You wanted honesty and that’s what most of the posters have presented.
Your scores and GPA are too low.
I know you really don’t want to hear that but I don’t think you will be able to get in based on your scores.
As an OOS student applicant, your scores HAVE to be better than their instate applicants. Unless you have been working on several practice tests, each and every day, I really don’t think you’ll come close to getting the stats you need.
The major requires a lot of tough coursework which will be difficult for you.

Alright, well guys thank you for your input, it does not hurt to apply, I will try to change my test scores definitely, so i could try to gain admission. Other than that i’m looking at applying to UCLA UofA, NCSU, Virginia Tech, MIT, University of Florida.

it good to be broad
