Hi! I was wondering if you guys could see how I would fair in the admissions process at several universities, including: North Carolina at Chapel Hill, Rice, Duke, Harvard, Chicago, Penn, Virginia, Columbia, Cornell, and Stanford. Thanks so much for your help!

SAT IIs: will take in october haven't yet

employment: N/A

Recommendations: Very close to the teachers that are recommending me, they will write good ones. One of them that I'm using for my most desired is especially outstanding.

Essays: good essay writing skills, spending lots of time on them and receiving advice from multiple sources. Trying to portray myself as still learning, devoted to intellectual ventures and the love of reading.

Other: Very bad financial situation. Parents had to file bankruptcy two years ago. Very stressful. English is intended major.

High level of interest in all colleges.

Thanks again, everyone!

Test scores and ECs are not going to cut it for Duke, Harvard, Penn, Columbia or Stanford. The other schools will be low reaches / high matches.

BS. Your test scores are fine. Your SAT II scores are a bit low, but not enough to get you denied because of them.

^A 2100 will be in the bottom quartile for most of the schools he listed. The 33 won’t be much higher.

^^ What? He hasn’t taken SAT IIs yet.

^ Completely false. A 33 is in the middle 50% for all of these schools.

A 33 would be a lot higher than the bottom quartile… I appreciate your opinion a lot, but a 31-34 is the middle fifty for many of the schools you said I couldn’t get into. I understand that my SATs are at the bottom quartile for some of them, though.

HelpWithSchools- sorry, I meant SAT I. It’s just a bit below average, but the ACT makes up for it.

billabongboy- You do realize that the ACT is out of 36, right?

OP: I believe your chances are above-average at UNC, Rice, Duke, and Virginia. As for the others, you should have as good of chances as most others, but acceptance rates are too low to say.

puggly - You do realize that Duke is just about as hard to get into as Penn, and is harsher with admissions than Cornell and Chicago are, right?

I guess I base my inferences on [inflated] data from MyChances, so that’s my mistake.

bbb: Just because Duke has a lower admissions rate does not mean that Duke is harder to get into than Chicago and Cornell, just the same as Brown isn’t harder to get into than MIT and Caltech. In fact, I would say that Chicago and Cornell are harder to get into than Duke.

So which of these do you guys think I have a pretty good shot at?

bumpbumpbump

Not sure where you live, but if you happen to be in NC, then you have good chances toward UNC and Virginia. Reaches for schools like Duke and Harvard, but then again they are for everyone.

Why don’t you guys listen to Billabong? He is a realistic son of a *****. SAT scores are low for Duke, Harvard, Chicago, Penn, Columbia, Cornell, and Stanford. In addition, you are a prospective English major without any ec’s demonstrating a passion in English. I would say that these schools are reaches but you do have a good shot at UNC and UVA.

I wouldn’t send your SAT, your ACT is more impressive!

Best guess:
High Reach: Harvard, Columbia, Stanford
Mid/Low Reach: Duke, Penn, Cornell, Rice, Chicago
Match: UVA, UNC

P.S. I really have no authority, I’m just trying to help :)

I think your scores are good for UNC, Cornell, and Penn, but that you need 2200+ or a 34 for the others. ( I am very impressed by your 36 on the science section of the ACT).

36 science ACT=impressive. Just send your ACT and not your SAT period. Class rank and EC’s are a lil low for ivy’s though.
UVA=low reach…(UVA’s out of state acceptance rate is below 20%)
UNC=match
Rice=???
Ivy’s and Stanford don’t know----just apply to like 3-5 of them and see what happens. Good Luck :)

Thanks for all of your help! My class rank went up from 21 to 14 last semester, and there is a very high chance that it will do the same again. I definitely will be in the top ten. I live in Oklahoma, by the way. I’m taking the ACT again on September 11th to try to get that 34, and taking the Subject tests in October.

Reach for all but UNC.

I hope you like light blue…

I live in OK too! What school do you go to?
