Please chance a junior for Cornell Univ. (Hotel Administration)

I am currently a junior in high school and I know I want to go into business. Cornell Univ. (Hotel Administration) is my 1st choice to apply. Here is my stat:

-I currently have a 4.18 weighted GPA (my school does not give unweighted GPA. I am guessing ~ 3.7, As & Bs)
-I am ranked top 10.7% of my class (~1400 students) in a very competitive public high school.
-I have taken almost all honors classes, 3 APs in sophomore year, 6 APs in junior and more APs in senior year.
-I have gotten a 33 on my ACT and will be taking it again.
-On SAT I got 680 CR, 740 Math, 610 Writing - 2030 overall. I have not taken any SAT II test yet.

ECs: I am in National Honors Society (3 years), a Dance Club member (2 years), 3 years Art class including Art 3D AP (I will make a portfolio for my 3D art work this year). I’ve played club soccer for 7 years with year-around intensive training, games and tournaments (my team is D1 team in the most competitive league of the area and is currently North State Rank #4, Region Rank #21, and National Rank #93). I have some leadership roles for few local youth programs and had enrich community service volunteer experience, etc.

I am an Asian male. I’d like to know if I have the best chance at Cornell Univ. (Hotel Administration) or if it’s a reach/match college for me. Please help to provide your advices.

Thank you for your time and please comment!

Better EC’s, and I would only submit your ACT score, omit your SAT. Other than that, for that program, you’re golden.

BluLegacy: Thank you so much for your reply.

Yes, I am also thinking to not submit my SAT. I’ve learned from Cornell does not required SAT II.

What make you think I am golden for ‘Hotel Administration’ program? Do I still have chance to get into Cornell Dyson School?

Thanks again!

Hotel Administration is much easier than Dyson school. I’m a Dyson applicant now as we speak, I get my results in 5 days which is probably a reject, unfortunately. It’s just ultra-competitive. Hotel Administration is not as stringent.

BluLegacy: Thanks for the info… Do you mind to share with your stat? If not, that’s fine. Just want to know how far I am for Dyson school.

I’ve heard that ‘Hotel Administration’ admission requires students with ‘Hotel’ working experience. I definitely don’t have such experience. Will the lack of ‘Hotel’ working experience impacts my application?

Many thanks.

BluLegacy: I wish you get into Dyson school. Best wishes!

The Hotel School is very much focused on fit, so try to get in some experience before you apply! If not with hotels specifically, try to get in some sort of management ECs.

Thanks @elcollege , but I’m a transfer student so my stats won’t be much help especially since I haven’t gotten accepted. Just do your best!

@Ranza123: Thanks for your comments.

I’ve planned couple of local youth events as one of planning committee/chairs and hosted the event as MC. I’ve also be the volunteer to help for a 500+ people banquet hosted by a local non-profit organization twice. Besides, I’ve been an assistant counselor for a local youth one-week resident summer camp for 3 summers. These are all volunteer work.

Will above volunteer work be counted as sort of management ECs or playing a leadership roles for College application, specially, for Hotel school?

Thanks again!

you need more hospitality ECs

Get a job in a Hotel, Restaurant or Catering facility. You need to how the ADCOM that you have a passion for hospitality.

While those are good ECs, I still agree with the above that you should have some actual hospitality experience.

Thanks for all above comments. Getting the actual hospitality experience seems a challenge for me. I don’t have any resource to query such experience. But I will give it a try this summer.

Other than the lack of hospitality experience, is ‘Hotel School’ a match or reach for my stat?

Thanks again.

Technically, Cornell is a reach for anyone…but I think if you show passion AND interest, you have a shot!

Show fit! If you can prove to the admissions officers that you have a passion and fit at the Hotel School, I believe you have a great shot! I believe you can do it. Are you applying ED next year?

Thank for all the comments. I will give it a try.

@0br0123: I am not sure if I will apply for ED or RD. Will it make huge difference for the admission if I apply for ED?

Yeah I’m pretty sure. Only do so if Cornell is your top choice though.
