Please chance a low gpa, high sat hopeful?

Hey everyone
My Stats are as follows:
Public long island, NY school; very competitive.
GPA: low 80 (est. 80-83) had a rough time after freshmen year; trying to get excellent grades senior year however. Also, didn't take any AP's but took a few college level courses.
SAT: CR: 680 M: 760 W: 800 (1440/1600) / (2240/2400)
My EC's are excellent and very business focused (multiple awards + internship in marketing) and it also specifys my passion in the world of business and economics . Have this exclusive EC where I made a business plan for nassau county, and they are implementing this to the newer Nassau Coliseum. I heard the award was prestigious.
I have great recs and am currently working on my essay which i think might be unique; i will really try to get my heart and soul out.
I would love to go to binghamton but because of my gpa, i get scared and i do admit i screwed up in high school but i tried on the sat. I am applying to Harpur for economics. Please let me know what chances I have at Binghamton. Thank you!

Your stats are actually very similar to mine except my GPA was a bit higher and my ECs were not nearly as good.

If you were applying to SOM, I would say you are on the border but would probably get in due to the impressiveness of your SAT and ECs. Since you’re applying to Harpur you should be in no problem.

You don’t know how happy I am to hear that! ^ haha thanks i thought my bad gpa would rule me out  but i guess my sat and ec’s saved that?
My original plan was to apply to SOM but i think its more safe to apply to harpur at this time then maybe internally transfer during soph or junior year. I really hope you are right and i get in! Is there any other way to show good interest other than applying early?

Yeah I would find it hard to believe that Bing would turn someone down with a 2200+ SAT unless their GPA is abysmally bad. Like straight C’s or something like that. An upward trend definitely helps and that combined with your SAT shows you’ve made mistakes as a freshman and have gotten serious since then.

I believe (an upperclassmen who knows more about admissions could correct me if I’m wrong here) you can apply for SOM and be placed in Harpur if they want to give you admission to the University but don’t feel you’re ready for SOM. I remember that happening in a few cases when I applied last year, so you could always do that. But to be safe I would call them or wait until someone on here can confirm that.

I’ve heard internally transferring into SOM is very difficult but doable. You need to maintain a very high GPA and take certain classes to be competitive for that.

Not that I know of. I would definitely take a tour of the campus and attend an information session if you can. They take your name down at those and it may or may not help your chances if you’re on the border of getting in. I don’t think anyone really knows for sure if that helps at all though.

Definitely apply for early action, though.

Hope this helps.

Thanks for all your help bud!
Yeah, the problem is that i had a great gpa my freshmen year (I came from a school from canada), then came to my current school and had inconsistent grades due to transition and parents coming in and out of the country (i was born in the states as a side note so im a dual citizen) and ended up with a high 70/low 80 gpa and then junior year i slacked off a bit and had similar grades and ended with a 3 year cumulative GPA of around an 80. The first time i took the sat i scored a 1500, then really stepped up my game and got a 2240. Although despite my gpa, i was a leader in school and always participated in everything.

So i had a great freshmen year but after moving from another country I didn’t do as well but I’m planning to really try senior year. I really did well on the sat’s and had good EC’s. Do you still think I have a good chance at getting into Binghamton for Harpur? Thanks a lot for your help.

Sorry, I overlooked the SOM and Harpur; Yeah I think you are right so I will apply for SOM if that’s possible and put down harpur as second choice!

Hey any other input and/or advice for the application and/or to stand out asides from my sat and Ec’s?
