PLEASE chance a new member!

Hey. I am applying ED to Wharton and intend on majoring in finance. If I want to also receive a more liberal arts education on top of Wharton, I might get a dual degree (if my GPA is high enough)... probably in math. (I also have legacy at Penn). I was considering applying to the M&T program which I would love to be in but I heard that if you are rejected from the program, your chances of being admitted to your second choice school is hurt (If this is wrong please don't focus on it and please tell me my chances). Could you also chance me for Harvard and Yale (my second and third favorite schools besides Wharton).

White
Male
ACT: 34 (Math 36, Science 36, English 34, Reading 31, Essay 10)... I think this is a good breakdown for Wharton and it is a true representation of my skills
SAT II: Math II: 800 , Chem: 780 , Math I: 720 (in 9th grade so its practically negligable)
GPA (weighted): overall 99.3

AP:
Calc BC: 5
Calc BC (AB Subscore): 5
Chem: 5
European History: 4
U.S History: 4
English Literature: 3

Senior Courseload:
EPGY Multivariable Calculus
AP English Language
AP Spanish Language
AP Computer Science A
Economics/Participation in Government
Physics (AP Physics is not offered)

Resume:

Awards and Distinctions:

9,10,11,12th grade:

High Honor Roll

11, 12th grade:

National Honor Society
Harvard Book Award
Chemistry Award
Math/ Calculus Award

Extracurricular Activities:

Tennis
Playing since I was 3 (I want to play club tennis in college)
Varsity for all 4 years of high schools
Weekyl lessons and clinics
Played in USTA tournaments earlier in high school but nothing special

Golf (similar)

Clubs:
Investment Club (founder)
Math Club
International Club

Community Service
volunteering at a program where i served as a mentor and tutor to kids in elementary school (1th and 12 grades)
volunteering at a homeless shelter but I am more of a mentor to these students

My common app essay mentioned both of these activities and my Why Wharton essay mentions how I will continue with these activities in college.

THANK YOU VERY MUCH.

I can't believe I forgot this!

I worked at a hedge fund for 4 weeks over the summer.
I actually worked as an analyst and wasn't treated like scum.
This might help with Wharton (interest in finance)

that .7 off your GPA could really hurt you...

its actually 99.329 but who is counting? can someone please chance me (with limited sarcasm :P)?

I'd say ur match and have a pretty good chance. One thing i noticed is tat u seem to be lacking in leadership skills but tats jus one thing...

You have pretty strong chances. But it is Wharton...so, you never know.

yea over the summer when i was making a resume and such, I noticed I was lacking in the leadership department so I founded the investment club (we are just starting clubs and we expect it to be popular)

yeah and this seemed to slip my mind... treasurer of the international club

What exactly did you do as an analyst? And what's your unweighted GPA?

Also, don't go around telling people a 31 on the reading section is a true representation of your skills. And a score is never negligible unless you have another one to replace it.

our school doesnt give unweighted GPAs or rank (but I do know it is the highest in my class)... we get 5 points added to our classes for APs...
it would probably be low/mid 98s.

And I just meant that overall I am stronger at math and science... 31 is still a good score and its not completely negligable but normally colleges only care about math II if you take both. (poor choice of words, sorry)

As for being an analyst, I analyzed companies... Of course, I was not qualified to make great financial assessments because well, I am in high school. But I did research on the sector the company was in and the actual company, read other analyst reports and sec reports, listened to conference calls, called companies and experts in the field to learn more. I did learn a lot while I was there but I am no expert :P

I think that with your legacy, your chances are probably pretty high.
Although some people may say you don't have "leadership", I think from your activities it is pretty obvious that you have a passion for finance.

I think you're in on the ACT, GPA, and legacy. More average scores and no legacy, it would be very questionable given the lack of standout academic achievements or interesting ECs. I think you played too much tennis- great for your long-term persona but does not proportionally help your application.

bump. anyone else?

i am not sure about your GPA, but everything looks very strong. except as already mentioned before, your leadership is kinda lacking. but legacy will definitely help you out.

def good chances for wharton. especially since youre a legacy. also i talked to my tour guide at penn and he said that when you get rejected from your first choice program it usually puts you in the upper echelon of applicant bc it shows ambition.

I will leave it up to you to figure out whether to put down "founding of investment club" because it is obvious that you did it to pad your resume as you have to put dates and one can see you only started it in your senior year.

I would only select activities that you showed long term (multi year) commitments and passion instead of putting a lot of things that you just participated in.

Thanks for your input but I submitted my app about an hour ago :P Investment club is my only activity that is only for 12th grade everything else is for all of high school... and i had tried to start the club for the past 2 years but they wouldnt let me until i was a senior for some reason that was never revealed to me

looks good. although i don't really know other gpa scale than 5.0 :/

but the rest is solid.

especially because wharton looks at calc bc and math 2c

i think your good to go.. wharton is a cold ***** mother so i mean it can go any way i guess. Ya just gotta make it seem like you are gonna somehow bring them a bunch of fame/fortune. aka one day you are gonna make fat donations to them

well i hope i can :P
and as for my gpa if you say unweighted 94-100 is a 4.0 then I have a 4.0 unweighted...

and btw thanks for these overall positive posts guys

i agree, the only lacking part of the resume is the leadership. other than that, you are a strong candidate.
