Please Chance a Non-Trad Student at UVA, W&M, NYU, etc..

Please chance me for the below schools as a Fall ’09 Transfer. My apologies in advance if this is a tad long.

My hopeful’s:
William & Mary – Mason
UVA – McIntyre
NYU – Stern
VT – Pamplin
JMU
GMU

I’m a non-traditional student in VA, in my late twenties and married (if that helps?). I intend on majoring in Finance, but am also looking at Accounting and Economics. My aspirations are to get into trading (mainly currencies) upon graduation. I have already spent 5+ years working in the financials, and most recently supervised over a team handling the reconciliations over the brokerage side of the firm, including dealing with international contacts as needed.
When I was younger and in High School I graduated with an Advanced Diploma, but my overall GPA was poor (think probably around the low 2’s). Since High School, I had taken a few random classes at local community colleges where I had lived, but did quite poorly (an F, a D, a C, and I believe 2 W’s), this was mainly due to:
a) Consistently working 60+ hours/wk on top of 3 hr’s worth of commute to and from work each day, and
b) To be honest, lack of motivation

To bring up to date, my wife and I decided last year to quit our jobs, spend the summer throughout Europe, and properly handle my education. I began attending the local CC in the Fall ’07 Semester, and to date have completed 37 credits (40 including 3 from 4-5 years ago, and then 46 if you count the 6 that I had transferred). Here’s what I have taken so far:

2007 Fall
ENG 111 - College Composition I – A
HLT 121 - Intro to Drug Use & Abuse - A
ITE 115 - Intro Computer App/Concepts - A
MTH 163 - Precalculus I - A
SDV 100 College Success Skills - A
ECO 201 - Principles Economics I –Macro - A

2008 Spring
ACC 211 - Principles of Accounting I - A
ECO 202 - Principles Economics II –Micro - A
ENG 112 - College Composition II - A
ITE 140 - Spreadsheet Software (Excel) - A
MTH 270 - Applied Calculus - A
PSY 201 - Introduction To Psychology I – B

2008 Summer
ENG 241 - Survey American Literature I – A

2008 Fall
ACC 212 – Principles of Accounting II – Currently enrolled – Assuming an “A”
BIO 101 – General Biology I - Currently enrolled - Assuming an “A”
HLT 230 – Prin of Nutrition/Human Dev - Currently enrolled - Assuming a “B”
MTH 240 – Statistics - Currently enrolled - Assuming an “A”
PSY 202 - Introduction To Psychology II - Currently enrolled Assuming an “A” or “B”

For Spring 2009 I am planning on taking BIO 102, ENG 242, Speech, and Ethics; I am also considering taking the upper-level math courses available, but am not sure if this would be a good idea at this point prior to transferring.

I also have HIS 101 and BUS 100 transferred in, and HIS 102 as a “C” from ’04, giving me a current College GPA of 3.775. I have yet to do my languages, but my reasons are:
a) I want to take German, and my current CC only has through the 102 levels and from what I have been informed, the teachings supposedly are sub-par
b) due to this, I would much prefer to take my language classes once I transfer to University

Will this hurt me from being accepted into any of my choices? I will be transferring with my 2-yr degree, and assume a cumulative GPA between 3.75 – 3.80. On top of this I have already secured references from both my Manager and VP at the brokerage firm I worked at, and will look into getting one if needed from my ECON/ACC Professor as well.
Sorry if this seems to have turned into a paper. Do I have a chance??? Thanks!

Stern and McIntire are probably matches to low reaches. You should get into all of the other schools.

I am a senior at William and Mary in the Mason School of Business. I am a finance major/economics minor. I know they only accept approximately 150 students for Fall. You can get another try in the Spring.

Here's what I would do. Call William and Mary and speak to somebody in the business school who can tell you if you meet all the requirements. I have a good friend who transferred to Mason after two years at Washington and Lee. He was accepted into Mason after he completed two required classes that were missing.

I think you have a good shot at several of your choices based on your maturity and your work experience in combination with a now proven cc GPA. I would make contact with each of the schools. All business schools within competetive universities are difficult to gain admission to. However, you've done a great job and no doubt will be on your way somewhere good in the Fall.

Great job. Don't let anything stop you.

Peace,
Pedsox

Would anyone chance this differently if OP was applying from out of state?

Definitely. Stern would still be a match/low reach. McIntire would go from match/low reach to probably reach/high reach. W&M Mason would probably become a match/low reach. I still think that even as an OOS, the OP'd still get into VT, GMU and JMU

Bump...

Thanks so far.. would anybody else mind chancing me?

I'm assuming money isn't a big issue as Stern is on this list, so I would add school's where the business program starts junior year like Ross and Haas.

Also, I would take the advanced math, the business programs want to see how you do in tougher classes.

Do you have SAT scores?

Stern is more of my, "Apply and see if I get in, and then go from there." The money would definitely be a huge factor to consider if I were to get into Stern along with my other hopefuls, but I've got to at least see if I could get in...

To be honest, I haven't considered either Ross nor Haas until now, and will look more into their programs.. With my stats would you think I had a fair shot at either as well?

I am going to look into the upper level math courses, although, after speaking with the admissions office for MSOB at W&M, they informed me that after confirming I have met their pre-req's for admission into the Business program, the next most important factor is GPA.. and that I should wait to take the higher level math courses after arriving at University so as to not potentially hurt my GPA.. Does this sound right? I would still like to take the courses..
I do have SAT scores, although I am not sure as to what they were off the top of my head (I took them 10 years ago). I will have to look into finding out what the scores were, but if I am not mistaken now that it has been 5+ years I should not have to submit them when applying for transfer..

I think it will be tough to get into a top program with no SATs and no advanced math. W & M could be different.

The programs need to know you'll be able to handle the math and A's at a CC in basic math won't give them that assurance. I have taught classes at a NY CC and my students that are able to transfer into top programs have proved themselves to be exceptional. They are able to get prof references that say they are exceptional and belong in a top program, have high scores, are often in an honors program and have certainly taken the CC's hardest classes.

DO think about money when applying, what's the use in putting the time into apps when you can't afford a school? The state schools generally give much less to OOS students, NYU is notorious for huge loans.....if you saved money for college you can look widely but if you're a transfer who needs aid money should lead the search. Some of my students have thought aid would be widely available only to learn that is not the case.

You may also want to consider going to a local college to finish undergrad and getting an MBA at a top program. Hopefully you have a foot in the door of the organization you worked for and can maybe get a trading job for a few years after undergrad.
