Please chance a scared Junior.

Hi, thank you for coming in to this thread for the intention of helping me.

Biography:
Junior, moved around much in high school (every year so far) therefore could not start IB, first generation college student, minority(Indian) and very low income family.

School: Charter school with about 40-60 kids in grade, not many kids sent to ivy league schools, I don't think any have gone to an ivy league school as a matter of fact. I live in an huge city in which public school education is really horrible and this is the best I could settle for.

AP classes:
Currently taking AP U.S. History(class) and will take 4 community college classes next year.(We only have 1 AP class and this is it and we can't start taking community college classes until senior year so I'm at a disadvantage here.)The community college classes will be advanced pre-calc, calc 1, calc 2, biology.

490 CR
570 M
490 W
SATII: Plan on taking Math 1, Math 2 and U.S. History.

Rank: Top 5(I think)

GPA:3.6-3.7 non-weighted

After school activities:
Working on podcasts for the Ohio arts museum
Working on Ohio's history in a city museum
Joined a quiz bowl team(Competed on television with 3 others)
Interned for a teacher and local business(1 year)
Joined a technology student association(TSA) team

I plan on becoming a extra college advisor for the school next year since the guidance counselor here only comes 2 and a half days and when she is here she is usually very busy to help out all kids.

College essay: I plan on writing about my life and how it has led up to my desire to truly further my education and lead a successful life.( I will elaborate it further but this is like a preview)

My life events would be being born to immigrants and had to learn English the hard way, my parents consistently moved due to how hard it was to keep a job as an immigrant who barely spoke English, during the 6th grade I moved 3 times because of that, 7th grade my parents were homeless so I had to move in with my cousins which recurred again during the 10th grade, I was also exposed to peers that were involved gang activities and drug abuse during the end of 6th grade and 7th grade, 8th grade I moved again and started to learn that education was my only key to the future, 9th grade I was still in the same town, my parents lost their job in the 10th grade therefore I lived with my cousins, 11th grade my parents got a job in a major city in which education was horrible and during early spring my dad had a heart attack which influenced my decision to become a biomedical engineer in the future since my dad was saved through an external heart pump.

I also plan on making a research paper to prove how serious I am about the heart pump and how I want to improve it after I achieve my profession. As well as that I will try and convince a professor at OSU to allow me to intern for him in the field of biomedical engineering and allow me to further my experience in that field.

I also plan on adding my televised quiz bowl performance in a dvd format to send in as well. I also plan on sending in a guitar performance in the form of a dvd performing the works of Mozart and other accomplished composers.

Colleges I made a list of (My application decisions are next to them):
RD Duke University
RD Dartmouth College
ED Vanderbilt University
RD Northwestern University
EA University of Notre Dame
RD Case University
RD George Washington University
EA University of Miami

Safeties:

I know my scores are not high for some like Duke and Dartmouth but I plan to further improve my scores and prepare more for the tests.

ED Vanderbilt University-good bet for a match
RD Northwestern University-possible match
EA University of Notre Dame-match

chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/694647-chance-mid-level-student-schools.html</a></p>

I would say your matches are GW, UM, and maybe Notre Dame depending on what you get on the SAT this time around! Good luck!

Chance me? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/695607-wrong-me-fall-love-these-schools-chance-me-tell.html</a></p>

Any more suggestions please?

i agree with harvard or yale for the time being. if you bring up your SAT/ACT you should be pretty competitve within your schools. Good Luck!!

Considering you got the same comparable score on the ACT and SAT, that might actually be the score you will continue to get. Try really hard to get to the scores that you said you can get (30 ACT), and with your story you have a great chance at all those schools. Good luck.

that SAT/ACT is not good enough for all of the schools on the list, but if you raise them, you have a slight chance at GW and Miami

Would it be possible to prep myself on the ACT with Barron and the red book and the SAT with the blue book to the point where my scores would be acceptable for these colleges? My goal is ACT 30+(Preferably 32) and for SAT 2100 (700 in each section). I am prepared to do numerous practice tests.

bump can someone please answer that last question?

Yeah, it is possible to prep yourself, especially if you have the skill base and are willing to take practice tests. Personally, I would recommend the ACT because it’s much more “teachable.” All you have to do is learn to pace yourself correctly. Work on English grammar rules and learn from your mistakes to know exactly what they’re asking for in the questions. Math you can practice practice practice and review all the rules. With these two you can score in the mid-30’s reliably with some practice, then you can turn to reading and science, which are basically just hunting down answers as quickly as possible. Good luck!!

Alright, thank you very much you have brought my hopes back up :).

yea, just study a lot for the SAT and ACT, while taking a lot of practice tests and you should raise your scores
