PLEASE chance a senior...paranoia is a real pain.

I am a caucasian, male senior applying RD to Cornell (Arts and Sciences). I go to a moderately competitive public school in NJ.

UW GPA: 3.983 (4.0 scale)

Percentile: 98th (I think I'm 6/438)

Superscore SAT: CR 800, M 740, WR 790=2330 total

SAT IIs: Math II 800, Chem 720, US History 700, Bio E 620 (freshman year w/o AP Bio)

AP Classes Taken (total of 8): Junior--Chem, US History, Span Lang, Stat
Senior--Physics, Euro, Calc BC, English Lit

AP Grades: Chem 4, US History 4, Stat 4, Span Lang 3

Sports: 4 years soccer ranked as high as 3rd in state, 2 years baseball, 4 years club soccer on a high level team competing in college showcases around the country

Extracurriculars: 4 years math team, Writer on school paper as a junior, Sports Editor as a senior, 2-year member of Susan G. Komen Breast Cancer Foundation

Volunteer Work: 20 hours at local animal shelter, 32 hours in summer program in Costa Rica

Work Experience: Counselor at nearby soccer camp for several weeks as a rising junior coaching youngsters, private tutor for several students each year ranging from 5th to 11th graders

Common App Essay: Overcoming adversity to make varsity soccer team and win Most Improved as a senior after being on JV for three years, very passionate (pretty well-written)

Recommendations: Excellent

You do not need to be any more paranoid than about half the young adults applying to Ivy League schools. Cornell is “easy” re admission only in relation to HPY. It is way tough by any objective measure.

You have a sound record. Good Luck!

Your safety schools are drooling!

So…would you say I have a good, decent, or poor chance? Or are you not sure? Sorry to press you, but as the title would indicate, this is an anxiety-ridden process. Any help would be appreciated!

You sound like an awesome candidate for Cornell or any college. I guess it depends on how many people just like you apply for the School of Arts and Sciences and how many they take. You’re definitely at the top and sound like a great kid - know that whatever comes of this you’ll be a success!!!

Hey, I recognized you from the Amherst thread, it seems like we have similar stats, etc. and so, though I think you have an excellent shot at Cornell, just a friendly warning that I got deferred with similar numbers to yours. So even kids like you could get waitlisted/rejected at Cornell (though I applied to HumEc which is huge on fit, while CAS is less so).

You sound like a good candidate, but just a warning - according to multiple admissions reps + essay-writing books, the “sports adversity” and “I got an epiphany while on vacation” topics are the two most severely over-used topics each year. Even if the essay is well written, you might have the admissions committee rolling their eyes, simply because it’s the 20th sports essay they’ve read that day (and it’s only 11am).

Yeah, I would say you have nothing to worry about.
I got in, and my SAT score isn’t nearly as high, and neither is my rank.

Haha, I wrote my essay for Arts and Sciences about …
never mind, it’s embarrassing. xD

Best of luck!
