Please chance a subpar score student? =/

So what do you guys think my chances are at the schools I've applied to/plan on applying to?

My stats are:
-31 ACT superscored, 29 highest for single sitting but waiting on Oct scores. Thankfully a lot of my schools superscore
-SAT IIs 670 history, 630 math, low I know :( but we didn't learn a lot of the material covered on the math test
-4.0 unweighted gpa, 4.5 cumulative gpa weighted with 4.8 for first quarter of senior year
-rank 3/690. 0.1 from being val!
-hardest course load available with 4 APs senior year and honors physics
-first to go to college from my immigrant family (I was born here though)
-fluent in Romanian, moderate Spanish
-female, suburban Ohio
-have a job at a mortgage company where I work 2-7 daily, zoo volunteer, freshman mentor, Girl's State Delegate, President of Spanish club, write a political blog, etc
^I am lacking though 9th and 10th grades as I had to take care of my younger brother everyday after school from 3pm-1 am since my parents worked 2nd and 3rd shifts
-major gov/international relations

Schools:
Cornell ED
Fordham EA
Case Western EA
Northeastern EA

regular schools:
Boston College
Boston U
Holy Cross
Trinity
Brandeis
Tufts
UChicago
Colgate
Syracuse
Ohio State
American/George Washington, kind of undecided between the two

Also, my common app essay is ~1000 words while my Cornell supplement is ~700 when the word limit is 500 for the supplement. I talked to admissions and they said this is ok but I'm afraid it'll look bad, esp in combo with my SAT subject tests. Should I just totally forget about Cornell and prepare myself for rejection so the blow isn't as bad in Dec.? It's my dream school but I feel really discouraged, especially when I hear of kids with 33 and 34 ACTs getting rejected... I do however think my common app essay really shows how I've changed and it's personal while people have told me that after reading my supplement they know why I want to go to Cornell, but I didn't really relate it too much to my ECs.

Sorry that was a lot of info to take in, any feedback is really appreciated it!

The scores will worry some of those schools, but I think your class rank, combined with your course difficulty, and UW GPA will get you into most of them. BU, Syracuse, OSU, American, Fordham, are all definite ins, UChicago, Cornell, Tufts, and BC are the biggest reaches, but none are huge reaches. Hopefully your October ACT scores are better, and then you will get into almost, if not all of the schools you applied to. Good luck. Chance me for NYU ED?

Umm, you’ve also got the first generation college goer on your side, as well as your fluency in Romanian, I’d highlight that. They’re looking for diversity, and you’re relatively rare, I’d wager.

Well its good to see another first generation senior Romanian who is fluent in the language looking about going into International Relations on this site =p. I’ll say this, the class rank, GPA, and course rigor are excellent although the testscores are low and the ECs are decent but not overwhelming. The first generation aspect might push some of the required scores down for you though, in which case you are otherwise very strong.

Cornell ED - Low/Mid Reach
Fordham EA - Match
Case Western EA - High Match
Northeastern EA - Match/High Match
Boston College - High Match/Low Reach
Boston U - High Match
Holy Cross - High Match
Trinity - High Match
Brandeis - Low Reach
Tufts - Low Reach
UChicago - Low Reach
Colgate - Low Reach
Syracuse - Low Match
Ohio State - Low Match
American (I’m picking American personally =p) - High Match
George Washington - High Match

Good luck with your college process. Chance back? : http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/806870-senior-worried-about-chances-top-southern-schools.html

Thanks everyone so far. Anyone have anyone have any safety/match suggestions for me?

Also do you think being first gen, fluent in Romanian, great recs, great rank, and good essays would be enough to have admissions overlook my SAT IIs? I want Cornell SO bad, I wish if you wanted something bad enough, you would eventually just have it, lol.

Well, if it is math I then it could be an issue, if it is Math II then I think its good enough. It will detract from the overall application, but it certainly isn’t so low it deserves to get sent back in your face.

Personally, I don’t think you need a safety school given the high number of matches/low reaches you have, but if you want to be a shoe-in somewhere then I’d have to recommend Ohio St. given your location.

^I know it’ll detract, but what worries me is the score in combination with my long essays. =( blah, I think I need to start loving my nonreaches, lol.

I see little to no chance that you don’t get into at least 2 (if not more) of the 6 schools I said might be reaches, so I think you’ll be ok for at least a few of your reaches.

^Awww, thanks that makes me feel better! Hopefully it’s Cornell and/or BC! So are you really a Romanian senior looking into IR/gov as well?

And anyone else? I’d really especially like input on the SAT IIs and how big of a factor they are.

You really don’t need to send the SAT IIs unless they are a requirement or they help your application (I don’t think they’re bad enough to derail it, mind you). If you have time maybe try them once more in December, but SAT IIs, especially at the mid-tier colleges, shouldn’t have you all worried. And yes, I’m a fellow Romanian senior looking into IR. Its a small world afterall.
