Applying: Columbia (1st choice, somewhat legacy- my aunt graduated with PsyD from there this year), Princeton (legacy- first engineering graduate ever), Yale, Duke, Wash U, Northwestern, Michigan (somewhat legacy- uncle), U of I, BU, NYU (legacy)... my hope is that of the first 5 I'll get in to one:)

You’ll probably get into at least one of the following: Columbia, Princeton, Duke, Northwestern and Yale
I think you’re pretty much in in all of the others.

Good chances overall…

Yale: Reach for everyone. Crapshoot.
Princeton: Reach for everyone, but you’ll at least be waitlisted.
Columbia: Reach for everyone, but good chances nontheless. Probably in or waitlisted.
Duke: Reach for everyone, but good chances nontheless. Probably in or waitlisted.
WUSTL: Most likely in.
Northwestern: Most likely in.
Michigan: In.
BU: In.
NYU: In.
UI: In.

You’ll probably get into one of the uncertain schools (Yale, Princeton, Columbia, Duke) and you’ll do great in the college admissions game. Best of luck!(:

thanks guys:) hopefully i’ll get into one of my top 5!

If Columbia is your first choice, apply ED. You stand a very good chance with the ED boost.

alwaysleah, i’d love to, but i probably won’t so that i can consider financial aid in my decision:(

That makes sense (I’m actually doing the same). Remember that you can estimate financial aid with Columbia’s price calculator. If you get something with the calculator that you can afford, then you can apply ED. If you don’t get enough aid during ED you can break the contract with no consequences.

If, on the other hand, you want to compare merit aid with financial aid then you will have to wait until April. You might consider Princeton SCEA in that case.

good idea! i wish columbia had a non-binding ea option:)
also, does anybody know whether being a triple-minority will make a big difference in the admissions process? is it a bigger advantage than being a single minority? just curious; i’m wondering whether i should focus on it in essays, etc.

bump. anyone??

The fact that you ARE a minority + your class rank and EC’s help a looot. I don’t know if being multiple minorities (is that even the right phrase? >>) helps, but if it’s affected you in some big way in your life, then definitely mention it in your essays.

I think you should be in/probably in in most places but Princeton, Yale, Columbia, Duke- The Ivies/semi-Ivies are always super unpredictable (buuut you seem like you have a decent chance!)

(Nothing to do with this WOOHOO Another volleyball player! xD)

http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1345137-take-chance-chance-me-d-hyp-stanford-mit-columbia-some-more.html

Even if you weren’t a URM, I would say that you will get into Michigan, Ill, BU, NYU. And probably Wash U.

Since you will definitely get into one of the above schools, I would apply to all the top 15 schools, and see what happens. It is often a crapshoot at that level, because acceptance rates are so low.

Perhaps you should apply to Wellesley too. Even though I am a conservative, Wellesley is an american icon.

If I had a daughter, Wellesley would be on the list.

Thanks, guys! floridadad55, are you saying that i should apply to the top 15 schools in the nation along with my “safeties”? that seems like a lot of apps!
