Extra Curricular Activities
I started and now manage a non-profit. I started the non-profit as a freshman . Since it began, there has been over $140,000 in donations. I do not want to state the name for privacy reasons. The non-profit has been featured in many national and local publications (including Reader's Digest, Costco Connection, etc) and has received many different awards from various local and national organizations. Currently, I am in the process of expanding the organization to all fifty states. I have also been asked to address the senate about the organization that I have started. From this, I will have over 2,000 hours of community service by the time high school ends. Does this make up for my low SAT scores?

I also currently am in the process of publishing a book with a major publishing house about the experience.

Sophomore Class President
Junior Class Executive Director
Link Crew
Safe School Ambassador
Board of Director at Local Charity
Piano

If you would like anymore information, please do not hesitate to ask!

Non-profit organisation! (Same here!!) well that will sound nice with your gpa but they like to see more, eg: in terms of leadership positions. the non-profit organisation covers you for community service (depending on what you do through it) but it does not cover the ECs completely. Use your time wisely and remain focused. Show your interests through your ECs/internships. Your ( Our-many in common :stuck_out_tongue: ) college choices are known for fierce competition, and there are plenty of students like us even with better standardized scores. Get your SAT I in high 2200s and with good support from your teachers and with good essays you will have a solid chance. But there is always that pinch of luck that one needs to get in at these highly competitive schools.

I wish you all the best!

:)

Chance me?

I disagree with the above poster; your extracurriculars are very solid. Quality is better than quantity. The only thing that will hurt you is your SAT score. Get a 2250 or higher, and you have good chances at all the schools you mentioned. (I would caution you, though, to make sure you apply to more safeties. All the schools you listed range from high matches to reaches.)

I disagree too. If this is a serious organization, as it sounds, I think you’ll find interest at top schools. Do raise the scores though.

The organization and volunteering you do with it sounds great, but it won’t make up for your SAT score. Study hard and get 2250+ to have a decent shot of getting it. You need to remember that there are applicants who will have SATs in the 2300s, tons of volunteer hours and leadership, and similar if not better credentials. Make yourself stand out in your essays and get started on them this summer. Good luck!

If you get your sat up to a 2250+ you have a good chance for at least one of those schools.

I disagree as well. I now someone who just this year got into Cornell with… A SAT score of 1650. She was born in Haiti and started a nonprofit this year. It helped her being a minority an everything but these days those schools love that cultural nonprofit stuff. I think u have a great shot. Harvard might be a bit of a gamble though.

You have a really good chance of getting into any of those schools with the nonprofit organization as an EC. Ivy Leagues are always looking for people who take the initiative and add something different to their student body. Of course, like everyone else has said, if you get up your SATs to the 2200-2300s, you have a pretty solid chance of getting in to any school you apply to.

Chance me back? http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1304596-chance-me-ill-chance-back.html</a></p>

Good luck! :)

everyone has already said it, but, your organization is a great EC. Only thing holding you back is your SAT.

Hey, your numbers are decent and like what others have said, work to increase that SAT score. I am thoroughly amazed at your service project, I know a lot of students who start “service projects” just for a leadership position and get little done, but my…yours is amazing! You seems well rounded, best of luck in your admissions!

Please chance me:
http://talk.collegeconfidential.com/what-my-chances/1247460-chance-asian-harvard.html</a></p>

You can’t really make up your SAT scores with your extra-curricular, but it will definitely boost your chances.

I would say that you want a 2200 on the SAT, 800 in Physics (I think it’s pretty easy though SATII don’t actually matter too much), and 750 on US. If you are an under-represented minority, live in an under-represented area (like Appalachia), or live in a low income household, you have a bit more slack for standardized testing.

Im sorry that I did not make myself clear earlier, no offense to anybody, but now a days people (adcoms) would look at the work you do through your organisation. Its not just establishing one on records, but to influence, help etc…
I definitely agree that quality is better than quantity, that is what I meant. Starting and working thru an organisation is not an easy task and you need one hell of a leader to move forward, but I do recommend to have more than just that organisation (because truly, I dont know what you do through it). Im sure you are focused, I could make that out… but you need to list all your ecs/positions too…
And as I said earlier, work for your SATs if you can… even now, your a competitive candidate…

I truly wish you all the best! Any college will be lucky to have you :)

BEST OF LUCK :)

I still disagree with Mehta; it sounds like the OP did a LOT of work and accomplished a lot through the organization. It was featured in major magazines and made national news, won tons of awards, and even led to the OP being asked to speak in Senate about it. That seems to be about as involved as you can get, and it probably took a huge time commitment. I think that’s more important than having two or three organizations with lackluster involvement in each.

Hello everyone, thank you for your opinions, I appreciate them most immensely.

In regards to the non-profit, I am the leader of the organization. It is all me facilitating appointments, donations, etc. The organization is most definitely a huge time commitment; I work about 20 hours a week.

I have been working to raise my SAT scores on my own. I will take the May SAT, see how it goes, and then ultimately decide if I need to do tutoring over the summer.

Besides that, is there anything else that I should be doing to have my best application possible?

Thanks!
Allyson

your welcome allysonbrianna,

xquiksilverx, you have again not understood my point, I never asked her to have ‘two or three organisations’, even thinking about that being a student would be insane. And my previous comments were not in regards to allyson, as I had mentioned earlier - it was in general. In regards to allyson, the coverage and achievements she are very impressive and the leadership positions/ECs I had mentioned were not in regards with her non-profit organisation… They were supposed to come from her school.

I hope this will end all the side trails to the main point I was trying to make… :)

Oh, I see what you are saying now, sorry for the misunderstanding. Haha, I can’t imagine how someone could have school involvement plus 20 hours a week on an organization, though. :)
