Please chance for specific programs & help with a dilemma?Sorry for info overload

Hi everyone! Sorry in advance for the information overload.

I’m a female, Hispanic senior in Florida. Applied & got into FSU w/scholarship &into its honors program; U of Pittsburgh w/scholarship; USF w/scholarship; FIU w/scholarship.I’ve applied to other schools, but I’m just focusing on American (obviously, since this is the AU forum).

Top 5% in class of ~400 students
GPA: 3.66 uw; 5.08 w; 4.0 college GPA uw
SAT: 2050 (720 CR, 620 M, 690 W)
SAT II: Spanish w/listening: 800, US History:670 (forgot to study)
ACT: 30 (33 english, 29 math, 33 reading, 27 science, 9 writing)
From 10th-11th, I took 7 AP’s: AP World, AP Spanish Lang., AP Stats, APUSH, AP Euro, AP Psych, AP Eng. Lang.
I’m taking 6 now: AP Calc AB, AP Geo, AP Enviro, AP Gov, AP Eng Lit & AP Art History

Extracurriculars (I’ll only mention the major ones):
-Writing club for 2 yrs; got selected to submit poem for county contest, didn’t win; got published on school newspaper
-Spanish Honor Society (11th-12th grade): Really successful year for fundraising this year, especially with Walk for Autism.
-National Honor Society: (11th-12th) Major activities include Pennies for Pasta and Trick or Treat for Unicef, in which both I was heavily inolved with. Aside from regular community work, I’m in Brain Brawl, an academic competition only for NHS members. Went to county semifinals
-National History Bowl: Got handpicked for this; my school’s A team qualified for Nationals
-Symphonic band for 2 years- in 10th gr went to adv. band b/c of playing ability

Volunteering: ~300 hours total
-Mostly in library in children’s section and with church in doing charity work. Helped promote literacy & was heavily involved in summer reading programs & festivals in library; helped with food drives & christmas presents for soldiers and did office work for church
-Also tutor ESE students in school b/c I’m in ESE for gifted.

Addtl info:
I’m hoping that my low math SAT scores will sorta be overlooked because I want to be a lawyer, so I’m not going to be involved in anything math related. I’m also hoping that because I’m hispanic, it’ll help out a tiny bit. Also, I got an interview scheduled next week for American, and have shown demonstrated interest in 8 ways including online chat, and getting in contact with alumni and current students.

I know I’ve been chanced before for American, and I’ve been told I have a good chance of making it in, but I haven’t been chanced for specific programs before. I want to know how much of a chance I have for the following programs: PPL & honors. I want to be a lawyer and go to law school in the future, so either one would be great.

Now my dilemma is the undergrad major. I want to major in both Poli-Sci and Psychology, but each major is in a separate school within American. Poli-Sci and the PPL program are within the School of Public Affairs, while Psychology is within the College of Arts and Science. Furthermore, you can’t major in Poli-Sci in PPL program. You can only do either Poli-Sci or PPL, or Psychology. Any help or opinions would be great, as I’ve been struggling on how to select a major, since the app is due tomorrow. I’m not sure what to pick, so please help!

If you help me, I’ll try to chance you back or reply to your thread. Thanks!

This is the first year that the honors program will be in the new format (requiring a separate application, and selecting a much smaller cohort). No one can really guess what your chances are because it’s not known how many people will apply or what their credentials will be. Certainly, you seem to be a strong candidate, but who knows what the pool looks like?

Best of luck to you. I think you’ll just have to wait and see.

Thank you! I guess it really is a wait and see program. Do you know anything about the PPL program though?

[New School of Public Affairs Three Year Politics, Policy & Law Scholars Program | American University Washington DC](http://www.american.edu/media/news/20131510_Three_Year_SPA_PPL_Program.cfm)

I assume you read this article? This describes how many applications they got in the first year of the program and the type of people they selected.

Thank you!

I understand that there are set majors for PPL. Now, if I don’t get into PPL, I wanted to double major in Psych & Poli-Sci, but they are in separate schools, since one is in CAS, and the other is in the School of Public Affairs. What should I do about that? Is one school more selective than the other? Sorry about all the bothersome questions.

You don’t apply to a specific school, you just apply to (and are accepted to) the university. You can switch around.

I believe you can double major (or major/minor) across schools, but you really don’t have to worry about this now.

When you have all your acceptances in hand, IF American is still on your list and you DIDN’T get into the program of your choice, you can get the answer to that question as part of making your final decision.

Thank you once again! You are really helpful  If I do get accepted, then I would probably go. This is my #2 pick, but since I have a low chance at my #1 pick, then this will probably be where I end up.
