Overall, I don't really have distinct factors in my app :(
However I want to pursue a career in medicine.
I have close friends that attend 3 of the schools listed above.
I could probably get 2 good recommendations from my ap math and science teacher, 1 from counselor hopefully.
Thanks for reading!

You have a great chance at the UCs and JHU. For UCs, you may be in easily as you are a california resident. You have a great app for the Ivies and Stanford too but so do many others. If you write great essays you may get into 1 of the 3 (BYS).

Best of luck!

I think that your objective factors are outstanding! Your GPA/Rank/Test scores are on par for any of the schools you’ve listed. However, it’s the subjective (soft) factors that will determine your acceptance. Think about it this way, nearly everyone applying to those schools also has amazing scores - so what sets you apart? If I were you, I would really concentrate on my essays and recommendations. Try to construct a narrative that makes you come alive on paper as someone who is more than just a set of numbers.

My concern is that you want to pursue a career in medicine, but your listed achievements don’t necessarily corroborate this. That isn’t to say you should switch goals by any means, it’s just a mismatch that might confuse an admissions officer. I would try to rebrand yourself and sell what you’ve done, then include a grand vision that is ambitious and inspiring.

Here is my analysis:

UCLA - High Match
Stanford - High Reach
UC Berkeley - Low Reach
Johns Hopkins - Mid Reach
Brown - High Reach
Yale - High Reach

If you have any other questions, I’d be happy to answer! Best of luck.

Thanks so much for your inputs, @humblefool and @SurpriseElephant! I will definitely keep those suggestions in mind.

You are a good fit for jhu and the UCs. The others are reaches. The extra curricular a are good, and I know it is difficult to portray level of involvement in a CC thread, but try to discuss the successes and accomplishments you’ve had and created in your leadership roles.

Best of luck

Bump
Looking for more opinions

Bump!!!

Your test scores and GPA looks excellent. However you look like every other Asian male out there who is applying. I see a mish mosh of activities, only one of which is related to a future interest in medicine. Why 300 hours volunteering at the local library? Why no research experience?

You have a strong chance at Berkley and UCLA. The other schools might be tough. You seem to be a good tennis player. Are you strong enough to be recruited by the college coaches? What is your USTA ranking? What about Water Polo?

Thanks for the comment. I realized that I was totally off w/ volunteering work. I hope it’s not too late to look for different places to research and volunteer. I really only volunteered at the library to earn a leadership role. I’m not really good at water polo, but I’ve participated in tennis competitions. I might have a hook for brown though! (family friend) .

Try contacting the coaches at each of these schools anyway. Water polo is not strong here on the east coast, so always looking for good athletes. Ever hear of Academic index banding for Ivy athletes? Your AI will be quite high and if you are a decent athlete, many Ivy coaches might like to have you as a bench warmer. Look into it.

Brown, Yale, and Stanford are all reaches, but they are for everyone. You still have great chances. It’s just hard to predict with those schools. You should be good with UCLA and Hopkins. You should get into Berkeley too but it’s not a sure thing.

Thank you @sgopal2 I’ll look into it! @BrownStudent19 thanks, Jw are you a brown student? If so, what helped you get in?!

Honestly, it’s nearly impossible to know exactly why. I applied ED, got deferred, and got in for regular decision. I think my essays were really strong and I had great ECs as well as all the other necessary things ( good GPA, pretty good SAT, great interview and good recommendations). When I got deferred, I had my guidance counselor write a really long letter about me to the school and also emailed my admissions rep telling her I was still seriously interested in Brown. I’m not sure if any of that stuff helped. I think the main thing, especially with Brown and aside from the academics and test scores, is to find a way to stand out either through really unique essays or really interesting ECs with great leadership positions. Hope this helps. Good luck!

Like many others on here including myself, try to focus on a few activities instead of a whole bunch. If you’re interested in pre-med, then do things relating to that instead of volunteering elsewhere. Your academics are good, just focus on standing out. Good luck!
