PLEASE CHANCE FOR UNC CHAPEL HILL

Hello everybody, UNC is my dream school and I’m about to submit my application but still feel incredibly nervous so any feedback would be appreciated!

I am applying as in-state and hispanic female (half white, half peruvian)
W GPA: 4.625
UW GPA: 3.917
SAT: 560 (CR), 600 (M), 560 (W) so 1720 super score
I know, I know, that score is low for UNC but they value grades and course rigor over testing and that is one of my strengths. However, I am retaking the SAT this weekend and have been studying a lot and feel pretty confident that i will be able to raise my score.
Taken all honors classes and 3 AP’s last year, AP Lang and comp (3), APUSH (3), AP Euro (3)
I would have taken more AP’s but I was in yearbook and that took up 2 class spaces. Senior year course load- 5 AP’s: Bio, Calc AB, World History, English Lit, and Psych, also taking Ceramics, Literature and Film, and dual enrollment at community college taking Sociology.

Extracurricular’s:
Animal Protection Club- 2x President
National English Honor Society- President
DECA- Vice president
Key Club- Special Events Coordinator
Leadership Club- Environmental Leader
Yearbook- People Editor
National Honor Society- Member
National History Honor Society- Member
Principal’s Advisory Board- Member
Golf- Varsity for 2 years
Part time job Nothing Bundt Cakes for 2 years
Volunteer weekly at a therapeutic horse farm

Awards:
Presidential Service Award- Volunteered 100+ hours
AP Scholar
Proficiency at DECA regional and state competitions
A honor roll 9th and 11th grade (whatever that’s worth)

Wrote one essay about a death in the family and how it caused me to transition to adulthood and learn about human endurance, very well written. Other essay is about a time I raised my voice when my teacher said Antarctica is unimportant, more comical but really shows my personality.
I think I covered everything so please chance me! Carolina is the only place I want to be and I really just want to know that I have a chance. Thank you!

Standardized test scores are really low-awfully low. But you are in state and hispanic so i think you probably have decent chance of getting in because your GPA is great. However, i think your second essay about Antarctica probably is not the best choice-unless YOU think it’s great (it just doesn’t sound that interesting to me). All in all you being an in state applicant means you have a pretty good chance of getting in, if you don’t you gotta retake that SAT. Good Luck!

I have to say, though you are in-state and hispanic, those test scores are awfully low for Chapel Hill, and I’m not sure that your grades will compensate quite enough to fix it. I would say raise it by at least 200 points for at least an okay chance. Also, I agree that the Antarctica essay was a bad choice. I would not really want to read about that.

I would also say raise your scores a bit, although I think the Antartica essay is colorful and as long it is well written. Maybe try the ACT, and see if you do better on it? ECs and grades look good. I would say its a mid reach to match.

I’ve had friends with very similar test scores and GPA as mine get in so I don’t think it completely ruins my chances. And I’m not going to go in depth about the essay but I promise it’s much more interesting than just “an essay about Antarctica” it’s quirky and funny and shows what I’m passionate about. I know how to develop an essay and everybody I have showed it to has loved it. I really just wanted to write about something more lighthearted and not as depressing as my other essay. Thanks for your inputs though!

Thanks @as9934 ! And I’ve tried the ACT and it was even worse than the SAT for me, I’m just not a great test taker. But I really think I’ll improve this weekend with all the practice I’ve done and getting used to the testing format.

UNC looks at the applicant as a whole, so your SAT will hurt you but not kill you in the admissions process. I know people with very low SAT scores who have gotten into UNC, so while it’s a low reach, it’s not impossible. Chance me back? Apply EA to boost you, its a high match because the SAT scores will hurt

You have good ECs and a good GPA. UNC loves volunteer work. Although your SAT is not amazing, its not that bad for UNC. I know some people who got in with 1600s. I’d say you have a decent shot since you are in-state.

My daughter is a freshman, instate student from a competitive public high school. Her highest class rank was #6 out of about 500 students. Her QPA was near 5.0 and her SAT was somewhere around your score for Math and Verbal (like 1160-1180 I think) and her highest ACT score was 27. She was captain of a varsity team and President, VP. etc. of various clubs. Member of NHS and several other HS’s. She is 100% caucasian so I would say your chances are pretty good!

I’m applying this year too. SAT only slightly higher than yours (1700), taken 3 times and my ACT is the equivalent at a 26, that I got three times in a row…UNC is my dream school too and I have been very stressed about my test scores hurting my chances as well…in ranked 12 out of 548 with an unweighted GPA of 3.85 and a weighted GPA of a 4.9…my counselor has told me not to stress about test scores, and you shouldn’t either  also, I read this link when I start stressing about it http://admissions.unc.edu/apply/how-we-review-test-scores/

i meant to say slightly lower lol

@RideOn @goheels44 Thanks for that perspective! I do know that they look at way more than test scores and I really feel like I’ve done everything I can so hopefully they see that. Also, I actually got a 1920 on the October SAT! Best of luck to you guys as well, let me know how it goes!

You have a great chance, especially with your new SAT score. Congrats on raising it and good luck! I think you have an excellent shot. Keep us updated
