Hi there, and thanks for the chance! :D

Your SAT score is pretty good, your GPA is fantastic as is your class rank, and you have a slew of great ECs! One thing I’m wondering though (not related to your chances, just purely out of my own curiosity): why did you take the TOEFL - did you move to the United States recently?

As long as you showed your dedication to UPenn and conveyed your passions, i think you have a pretty great shot at getting in! (low reach/high match)

Good luck to you :)

Sure thing, your application was a monster! :P

Thank you for replying back! To answer your question, yes I did, I am South Korean and I moved to America when I was in 4th grade. Still no citizenship or anything, so I took the test.

Again, thanks and good luck to you as well :)

From what I can see, everything in your application is very solid. I am also wondering why you took the TOEFL, as that’s usually reserved for solely international applicants. You seem to have tons of varied EC’s, which is always good. In addition, living in the midwest, while it may have a minimal effect, can be a positive factor. I’d say low reach, as it is an ivy. Best of luck!

Thank you for doing this! I took the TOEFL a while back, but I just wanted to make sure I had it in case a college had asked for this since I moved from Korea.

I’ve actually been advised against taking the TOEFL for American colleges. I moved to the US four years ago, but never took the test and don’t plan to (I’m a senior). I think it shows that you are just as proficient in English as any other applicant, and don’t want any special treatment despite not being a native speaker.

You sound like a great candidate for an Ivy!!! I would love to be chanced back for Dartmouth, if possible! My GPA is 94/100, my school uses the /100 scale. I’ve taken 6 out of the 7 AP’s offered at my school, and am second in a class of 54 (super small school). I have run cross country, nordic skied, and ran track and field for all four years of high school, been a cross country captain for two years, nordic captain for one, and will most likely be track captain this spring. I listed that I’ve been pretty successful in competition as a nordic skier. I just took the SAT’s for the third time Saturday, and I think I can have about a 2100 with a superscore, and have a 30 on the ACT’s, and think I can bring that up to a 32ish this coming Saturday. I have two Dartmouth specific rec’s, one coming from a teacher who attended Dartmouth, the other from my computer science teacher (the subject I will major in). My essay was very good (according to my teachers/family) and my supplement will be alright. I’ve worked all summer every summer since 8th grade, mostly at my father’s boat business (my essay topic). LOTS of hours at work. For the SAT II’s, I scored a 730 on US History, and didn’t do so well on math, but I’m retaking math 1 and 2 in January and I know that I can score above 700 in both.

Plus band for all four years of high school, as well as German for all four years.

ekim33,

Your application in terms of ec, GPA and rank seems very good. If you get the 32 or 2100 on the tests, it sounds like you’d have quite a chance. It is Dartmouth though, and there will be plenty of competition. I’d say high match/low reach if you get those scores.

chancemaster12, what do you mean family in my app? If you mean the part with dental influences, the dental supplement for penn asks directly for members in family who are involved in dentistry.

chancemaster12, I did mention that my suggestion was valid only if he did get what he predicted in his scores.

What exactly is a “hook?” And chancemaster12, thanks! To answer your question, I wrote my commonapp essay about deciding to part with the opportunity to take over my father’s business and how my progress through high school/interest in computer science have shaped my views over time.

CHANCING BACK:
You definitely have a great chance, but with these schools its almost like it random, because so many others that also have great transcripts equal to yours will be applying too.

Alright thank you for your advice, I see what you mean.

anyone else?
