Weaknesses: Unweighted GPA? I know my SAT is low for now, but I hope to raise that up to a strength.

*I am very concerned that my grade of 72 the 1st semester of sophomore year in my Accelerated Math 2 class will greatly affect my chance of admission.

---Senior Course Load will include 4-5 AP's
(Total number of AP's:8-9)

Thank you so much and I can't tell you how much I appreciate you taking your time to give me a better insight of my future.

Your EC’s are great- they make you a solid and well rounded candidate. I’m not familiar with most of your schools, but I want to say BU is definitely going to be a reach school for you. I also ran Cross Country and Indoor/Outdoor Track all four years haha

Bu is a match I would say, but definitely tough. Just keep working hard! You will have a good return at school. Good luck

Try connecticut college, bc, goucher, tulane, colby, holy cross, brandeis, bentley, temple

BC and Brandeis are not very good suggestions. Your stats well below their averages. Tulane a reach as well, but not as far.

I know kids who got into BC with his stats

Sure, it happens sometimes with URM, legacies, other hooks. But just look at average SAT.

[Frequently Asked Questions - Boston College](http://www.bc.edu/admission/undergrad/international/frequentlyaskedquestions.html) Now obviously that writing score is a typo and it is supposed to be 684. The 25-75 range is about 610-700 CR, 640-730 M, 630-720 W, so the OP is below the 25% mark in all three areas right now. I suspect the average UW GPA is about 3.6 or so, but they don’t appear to report it so it is really impossible to compare his to the typical admitted student.

Nothing is impossible, just saying I don’t consider it the best advice in the world.

Hey guys, BU is not my main choice, but thanks for the posts. Could any of you chance me on any of those other schools, especially U of Maryland, U of Wisconsin Mad and USC?

Actually we were talking about BC, not BU, because I disagreed with someone’s suggestion of it. It is extremely selective. BU is a reach, but nearly the reach of BC.

By USC I guess you are still referring to South Carolina, not Southern Cal. South Carolina is quite reasonable for you at your current stats. If you don’t get your SAT scores up, UW-Mad is a big reach. I don’t know as much about Maryland, but from what I see on here it seems unlikely as well. You really need to get those scores up.

Miami is the most possible of the privates, you are around the 25th percentile on their scores. So a reach, but at least not out of the question. Wake is not likely at all. UGA is a possibility, more selective than South Carolina but not completely out of reach.

How difficult is South Carolina to get in? My impression is that it is pretty easy to get admission?

It is the easiest on the list. For 2009-2010 SAT range is 530-640 CR, 560-650 M, 24-29 ACT; 27% in top 10% of high school class, 60% in top quarter. About 63.5% of those applying were admitted. UGA, by comparison, is 560-660 CR, 570-670 M, 25-29 ACT, 54% in top 10%, 89% in top quarter, and just under 54% were admitted. UW Madison is 550-670 CR, 620-720 M, 26-30 ACT, 56.5% in top 10% and 91.3% in top 25%. They admitted 57% of applicants. Maryland is 580-680 CR, 620-710 M, No report for ACT, 71% in top 10% and 91% in top 25%. Only 42% were admitted at Maryland-College Park. Except for that last admission %, not a huge difference overall (although the SAT difference is fairly wide when you compare Maryland to USC most notably), and they certainly might each have different policies for OOS students. Maryland certainly appears to be the most selective, however.

Does Univ of South Carolina have a reasonably good academic reputation? I know nothing about this college.

Well, it certainly is not considered up there with Michigan or Berkeley, but you can get a completely fine education there. I have heard something about their international business school being one of the best, but you would have to research that. Like most undergraduate schools, even the Harvards of this world, the most important thing is what is the best environment for you, then look at individual departments for areas you think you might have an interest.

Frankly, I think that most of these schools are quite solid and you will be taught pretty much the same things. Certain areas like Biomedical Engineering and other highly technical and specific topics would be an exception, but otherwise I think the biggest factor for academics is surrounding yourself with the brightest students you can without being completely out of your league. That is why, if you are serious about getting a good education, your best bet is usually to go to the highest reach school you get into, all else being equal (which it never is, lol). But again, that is only when it comes to academics and there are numerous exceptions to that “rule”. Still, it is worth thinking about. I am quite sure that you can challenge yourself at USC.

If you mean reputation outside of South Carolina, people will just assume it is a “regular” state school, nothing special. Don’t worry about that, though. Unless you can get into a really top school or are going to stay in the area the school services and is well known, reputation isn’t all it’s made out to be. Having the degree is paramount, then making a good impression is what will serve you best. After you have that first job, where you went to school matters almost not at all, except for conversations.

Final question: In your opinion, is College of Charleston basically comparable with USC in terms of overall academic reputation?

IMO, yes. Of course they are VERY different experiences, but in terms of how people perceive the academic rigor and the stats of the actual average student, I would say they are very similar. C of C might have a slight edge in perception, if only because it is private and that gives an appearance of more selectivity to many people. The facts are that C of C actually admitted 71% of applicants last year, and the enrolled class had SAT of 560-650 CR, 560-640 M, 23-27 ACT, 30.5% in top 10% of class, 67.7% in the top quarter. That’s pretty similar to USC.

You are amazingly helpful and knowledgable! Thanks much.
