I am a girl out of state in New Jersey. My high school is very competitive. I will graduate with 8 AP classes. I have a 4.13 weighted and 3.8 unweighted. My act composite is a 31. I work at least 23 hours per week and play piano. I am nervous that i will not get in, does anyone have any advice?
You have a very good chance to get in even with Merit Scholarship.
You’ll get in and most likely get the $15,000 per year. OSU saw a huge spike in applications the year after winning the 2014 national championship in football, and because of this Admissions were incredibly competitive, with normal admits being waitlisted, and those on the bubble being denied. The year after, however, applications went back to normal levels, and so did the admissions standards. This is only a hunch, but I believe that the same thing is happening at Clemson. Last year admissions were the toughest they have ever been, with many students with a 29 being waitlisted, where the year before they would most likely be admitted. And many students with 28s were denied, where a year ago they would be likely admits. I’m guessing that Clemson’s admissions office will see a slight decrease in applications this year, and applicants should expect the standards to be the same they were last year, not any tougher.
And maybe even decrease a little
@Sgunn3 I live in SC and can tell you that applications to Clemson have grown steadily over the past 5 years and acceptance has gotten increasingly competitive. It’s not just related to the football championship. Many high stats students are using Clemson as a safety making it increasingly more competitive as students are applying to more and more schools.
@carolinamom2boys There is a general trend between football success at schools and the number of applications that school receives. Clemson is no exception to this. The more a schools name is in the news, the more students will be motivated to check it out and even apply there. I agree that Football isn’t the only factor driving Clemson applications up, but it certainly is a big reason.
@carolinamom2boys here’s a Forbes article on the “Flutie Effect” which is what we’re talking about:

@Sgunn3 I understand what the “Flutie Effect” is, I’ disagree that it is causing the increase in applications. The increased number of applications started before Clemson won the National Championship. As hard as it is to believe, many people apply to Clemson and have no interest in football at all.
What year do you believe the applications started to increase? @carolinamom2boys
According to Clemson’s fact book, applications increased sharply in 2014. In 2013 Clemson won the Orange Bowl against #7 Ohio State and finished the season ranked #8. I agree that many people go to Clemson not just for Football, but there is a direct relationship between how well a school does in football and the number of applications they receive.
@Sgunn3 applications began increasing 5-6 years ago. I live in SC. I am aware of trends. My DS16 was offered provisional acceptance at Clemson as a junior and later accepted to Calhoun Honors. I have attended multiple information sessions given by Clemson over the years . Many of my best friends are alums. If you want to believe it’s because of football , by all means believe it.
My DD was one of the high stat OOS kid who applied to Clemson as one of her safety school and got accepted to both the school and Calhoun. She was ultimately rejected and UNC, UVA, Brown and Princeton and wait listed at Vandy.
The reason she was drawn to Clemson at all was the size, the campus, the weather, the rankings with regard to kids who love their school, the 1st year retention rate, the honors college, the alumni bond, and the fact that it has all the programs that major public universities have. The merit money for the high stats out of state students also makes it a very attractive school.
She first looked at the school last year on the Friday of homecoming and although it was somewhat related to FB she really loved the vibe as she walked around campus and all the kids in orange and the huge homecoming floats on Bowman Field. The entire campus just had a great energy that she really liked.
So far she is doing well and enjoying going to the football games…lol…
@burghdad That’s awesome to hear! Clemson is an amazing school. I like it for all the same reasons your daughter does, but if it wasn’t for their athletics dominance I probably wouldn’t have even looked into it. I’m extremely glad I did though! All I’m saying is that being good in football or basketball is going to generate more inteeest in the school, and because of that more kids will check it out! Glad your daughter is enjoying it
