I go to a prep school in New England, from Connecticut.

Gender/Ethnicity: F/white
GPA: 4.5 weighted (appx- we're not given our actual GPA's)
ACT: 35
SAT 2's: US History- 770, Lit- 690, Math 2- 690
AP's: 4 as a junior, 5 senior year
- I got AP Scholar with Honor this year (English- 5, US history- 5, French- 4, Bio- 4)
EC's:
-dormitory prefect
-editor in chief of a literary magazine
-president and co-founder of SADD at my school
- soccer/tennis
- 4 year member of select physics and engineering team

I was also Cum Laude

And just happen to have legacy at Georgetown

I can’t believe your SAT2s are going to hurt you. Every body knows Math2 curve and even as Silverturtle pointed out anything below 780 is regarded average. But your Stats are very good and Vandy is a good choice for you as they care about SAT and ACT but not SAT2s. Duke is GPA oriented and with your Stats you are a good candidate. Here is what I would do If I am in your situation. Apply ED1 to Duke and in Dec if you don’t get in apply ED2 to Vandy. And ofcourse, have a bunch of EAs lined up too.

Last year, my son, who had very similar stats, got into UNC (out of state), got waitlisted at Vandy, and was rejected at Duke.

Also waitlisted at Emory.

My advice is to apply to a lot of top schools. And not just schools 1-20 on the US News rankings, but schools 21-40 as well.

Everyone on CC seems to recommend that you just about to 8-10 schools, but I recommend 25. If you apply to 25 top schools, you will get into 2 or 3 of them. If you apply to 8 top schools, you might get rejected at all of them.

If money is not a problem, I would also apply to top OOS state universities like Berkeley, UCLA, Michigan, and Virginia. They probably need the OOS money, so your chances may be increased somewhat. And perhaps something like a USC.

And don’t pay attention when a school says that their acceptance rate is, for example, 25%. If you are not a URM or a football/basketball star, YOUR acceptance rate is lower.

You seem to have a chance at UNC, and having legacy will help for Georgetown (but you need stronger ECs for that). You might need better scores for both Duke and Vanderbilt. Your ACT is great, and let’s just hope you’re unweighted GPA is above a 3.6.

I just want to point out (not in my defense but just the facts) that since I go to boarding school, extra curriculars are not as easy to accumulate as if I were at a normal day school. I also was a nanny for a little girl this summer and a teaching assistant at a summer school, teaching algebra to middle schoolers (I dont know if that changes anything, but yall said I needed stronger extra cirruculars…

And qtpiginger: I think my unweighted average is around a 3.9, not sure though because we’re only given our number averages

foridadad, your son was waitlisted by Vandy with act 35. I have been poring over different Vandy Stats that may be the first time they did that. But UNC is a very good school and equally difficult to get into.
