Oh, and my Grandpa went to Cornell. I'd love to go to Cornell, close to home, ivy, great education, in the beginning of the college search I really wanted to go to Wharton, well because it's WHARTON (and my very commanding uncle went there so he kind of led me to that conclusion) but realistically Cornell is a reach school by itself I think... So do you think I have a shot? Thanks!!! Btw also applying to Northeastern, Babson, Bentley, Fordham, Carnegie

Your GPA is a little low, but fine. Your weighted GPA being not much higher then your unweighted implies that you did not take a lot of honors/AP classes. If this is because your school does not offer them it is not a problem, if you chose easy classes it is. The biggest concern is that your SAT score is very low for an ivy and you don’t have any subject tests yet. If you do get a 35 on the ACT that will nor longer be an issue (though apparently it is very hard to get a 35). The other issue I see is that you have no ECs which you were in all four years, no community service and you do not have a ton of leadership. Also I would remove poet from your resume unless you have been published and/or won awards.
Basically Cornell is a reach, probably a high reach due to the ECs and test scores, CMU is probably a reach too and I don’t know enough about the others… Hope this helps!

As it stands now – based solely on Cornell’s published numbers (and what we’ve seen from other students who apply to Cornell) – it would seem that Cornell is a reach though not impossible.

I think about 90% of Cornell’s class is in the top 10% of the class. Also your 1970 SAT is probably a bit below average (though not a killer) for Cornell’s enrolled students. (Of course a 35 ACT would be phenomonal). Nonetheless, I would recommend that you apply. CMU reachish. The others are matches or better. Based on your stats – Wharton looks like a high reach.

Thanks for the quick responses!!! Definitely helps, and what you found was actually helpful if that’s all you found, makes me feel good. My school is very hard on grades and doesn’t weigh heavily. I also have taken every IB and AP course my school offers, in my entire school only 4 other students are taking as hard a curriculum. I only took APs junior year. For EC I have boy scouts, just assumed by saying eagle scout. But ya I’ve been a scout since 1st grade and have over 250 community service hours 9th-12th grade through scouting. That would also be my leadership, along with being captain for my teams, and starting a business, I employ two people.

My SAT is a tad low but I’m confident I’ll have at least a 34 ACT
I’ll be taking the SAT II for Math and US history october

Greg – a 34 ACT would help. In any event, I don’t want to be discouraging re Cornell. You certainly have a shot. Apply.
