Please chance me, dream of mine is GWU!

Hey all,

If you don't mind giving me your educated opinions on whether I'll get accepted or not, that'd be much appreciated. I'm from Maryland, I will be able to pay in full (no financial aid required), and I am currently a junior. Here's my quick resume:

-Male, white, Jew
-3.76 weighted GPA
-3.19 unweighted GPA
(Both will go up with senior year -- taking challenging classes I excel in)
-One of the most competitive high schools in USA (like 200something out of top 1400, ranked by Newsweek, national blue ribbon school)
-9 total (including future senior classes) AP classes - passed AP exam on all of them (although mostly 3s)
-All other non-AP classes are essentially Honors/GT
-Over 200 hours of community service
-Internship at my county's Historical Society
-4 AP classes during senior year
-1960 SAT, taken once so far, will take twice more.
720 reading, 650 writing, 590 math
-Founded two clubs, one of which eventually grew to 50 or so members and became a school team (Ultimate Frisbee Club/Team)
-Numerous club participation
-Best Buddies peer buddy -- Had to complete interview out of a pool of numerous people and was selected to work one-on-one with a mentally handicapped student throughout the year in and out of school
-1 of 2 boys selected to act in school play as a freshman, was on stage crew for numerous play productions
-Private pilots license
-paid maintenance and activities work at nursing home
-took three years of honors spanish, currently attempting to learn Chinese

Also, I have good letters of rec from two teachers and a great college essay (i love writing) on a backpacking trip I did by myself from the Andes to the Amazon when I was fifteen for a month.

I would like to major in International Affairs, which is why I would like to attend GWU. On my resume, I have an added section for "International Travels", as I have traveled to many foreign countries by myself, interacting with the people, learning about the culture, and doing volunteer work.

Thanks a lot, it's truly appreciated!

Without early decision, reach.

Thanks for your response, what can I do to increase my chances?

Also, if I do apply with early decision, do you think that I will be admitted?

Yes, I do. But RD is completely unpredictable these days.

Your chances will increase greatly by applying ED 1 or 2.

I think you have a good chance. I got in and your SAT scores are a bit above mine and you have tons of ec’s! Granted, I did apply for SEAS so there’s a lot less competition.

Also, don’t make it seem like GW is a safety school for you. I talked with an guy in admissions and he said that they really don’t like it when GW is obviously a safety school - they usually waitlist those people.

It’s definitely NOT a safety.

GPA is weak.

3.1 GPA is too low for even National Honor Society (need a 3.5 for NHS). It’s not a “bad” GPA, but it’s low, especially when applying to top tier colleges. Work on that first semester and apply again to schools in the spring. Apply to some safety schools that your GPA isn’t “weak” at also, along with applying to some competitive schools.

Top high school = good.

Extracurricular = fine/good. Highlight these in your essay and admissions. List the most impressive/unique ECs, instead of listing everything you’re a member of. These show initiative. Figure out a way to highlight them in the application. Your ECs sound fun.

Write a good essay.

MD, white Jew = not an admissions hook. (You’ll find in… tons of NJ/NY/MD Jewish here).

I would say you have a chance with the ECs and a strong essay, but your GPA is weak. Don’t count it as a safety school, as you may or may not get in. Lots of people with high GPAs, loads of ECs, etc. apply to schools like this. Good luck.

Thanks a lot for the detailed reply.

My essay is great, I’m a very strong writer.

So do you think I’ll get admitted with early decision I or II? What do you think are my chances of getting admitted with regular admission?

Thanks.
