Hello Everyone!
I’m a white male
weighted GPA:4.23
UC GPA: 4.41
Within the top 9% of my class (ELC)
ACT: 29
SAT: 2040; Math:670; CR: 670; Writing;700
My SAT 2’s suck…I’m now studying for them though…
Math 2: 640
Chem: 650
I took 4 AP’s during Junior year and 2 honors. I received the following on the tests (it’s ugly)
Chem: 2
US History: 2
language: 5
Spanish: 3
My senior year also consists of 4 AP’s
For my EC/Community Service…
-2 years volunteering at a health clinic as a facilitator.
-A paid internship for an environmental technology company
-I’m confirmed in the catholic church (not sure if this is appreciated)
-volunteered at church
-attended the family giving tree event each year.
-Probably have around 150+ volunteering hours.
-I have been in the math club for 3 years
-I have a math award for both geometry and ag/calc
-Volunteered at a chinese culture fair (I’m a quarter chinese!)
-CSF for 2.5 years

I’m applying to UCLA, Berkeley, UC Davis, UC Irvine, UCSD, Cal Poly SLO, etc.
I’m particularly interested in my chances at UCLA (I know it’s a stretch), UC Davis (My number one choice!), and Cal Poly SLO
Intended Major: Civil Engineering

Thank you everyone for the help! It is very much appreciated!

I’m not sure how hard admissions are for Davis Engineering, but I do know that if you applied for something in the College of L&S, you’d most likely be in.

Your GPA is good, but I think you will need to bring your SAT up higher to get in any of those schools for engineering. I’m guessing that they would want to see higher math scores if you want to be an engineer. If you can’t bring it up, I would put down a different major and try to switch after you get there (I know you can’t do that at SLO, though).
By the way, the UC GPA is a weighted GPA for sophomore and junior years only. It also has a cap of 2 classes per year for the extra weight. So, I figure people could have a max UC GPA of 4.4 and that would be if they got all A’s and only took 5 classes both sophomore and junior years. If you took more than 5 college prep classes, then your UC GPA would have to be lower than 4.4.
FWIW - I had 2130 sat (800 math), 790 and 720 SAT II (math 2 and physics),
UC GPA 4.0 (3.7 unweighted), and below average ECs ( one sport 4 years,
1 club 3 years).
In at UC SB, UC Irvine, waitlist at UC Davis, reject at UCSD, UCLA, UCB, and SLO.
This was 2 years ago, and I think it was even harder for people last year.

Jbourne, thanks for the response! From my understanding, uc’s weigh GPA much greater than sats. And sat 2’s are barely even looked at now (for privates its a different story.) And I know the uc GPA is correct. I attend a very competitive high-school and my transcript shows all my different gpa’s. My weighted is 4.23, unweighted is 3.8 and uc is 4.41. I could be wrong, but I was pretty confident that I would have a good chance for Davis.

After doing some research, I found that most ucs cap at 4.5 and that the +8 points Max for AP/honors is simply for uc eligibility purposes. When calculating for admissions, the school looks at your complete weighted GPA for 10-11. Can someone correct me if I’m wrong? Jbourne, you have officially scared the crap out of me! Haha

I didn’t realize there was a different UC GPA for eligibility and for admissions? But yes, you are right - I believe they do weight GPA pretty high, which didn’t help me any. I just went to the UC Davis website and see that admissions are changing starting with 2012. You can now get into a ‘UC’ with a 9% statewide ranking as well as the 4% at your high school. I sure don’t know if it will be the same, but it was reported here before that all the ELCs (4%) were accepted at Davis.
Not trying to scare you off, just a warning about the whole engineering thing. You end up in a much smaller pool of people AND that pool of people are typically top of the class. I thought Davis was a sure match/safety and it ended up being the top I got accepted to (well, waitlisted, then accepted).
Good luck to you - I know the waiting is hard.
