Hello, if someone could chance me as an Aerospace or ME (alternate) major, I would greatly appreciate it! (FYI, I already went through the RD results thread for last year for a reference, but only one person applied as an aerospace engineering major.)
CSU GPA: 4.08
Cal Poly SLO GPA: 4.06
ACT: Comp (34), English (32), Math (35), Reading (35), Science (35) (Retaking this Saturday to raise English score)
ECs: 21+ hours per week with leadership positions in a few of them
MCA: 4642.1295
I am mainly concerned with my CPSLO GPA since it is lower than the average accepted student for Engineering. Would it hinder my chances of getting accepted?
For Engineering, a MCA Score of 4700 is competitive. You look like you are within range so definitely possible.
AE and ME have projected acceptance rates around 16-18% so both will be a tough admit. Since ED is not available this year, it should be interesting to see what kind of admission stats will be needed for an acceptance.
There is no “safety” major in the College of Engineering. Industrial, Materials and General Engineering have higher predicted acceptance rates than AE and ME.
I got in for aero under early decision last year with an MCA score between 4200 and 4300. Crazy huh?

I’d say you have a good chance but then again cal poly admissions are a little wonky. Many of my friends from the same HS with better stats did not get in for engineering. I think what helped me was applying under ED. Good luck!
@Gjjfcmkfb, you likely miscalculated your MCA. Cal Poly counts 9th grade in your GPA. Your mother’s lack of a HS degree adds 300 points. If I assume your GPA is still only 3.7 with 9th added in and with your mom’s bump, your SAT would have had to have been below 1000 for an MCA of 4200. I doubt that was the case. When students with lesser stats get in ahead of those with higher stats, it’s usually because they got some non-academic adder they weren’t aware of (parent w/o HS degree, Hayden Partner School, etc.).
