Please chance me for AU

Hi. I’m currently a junior in high school and I am extremely interested in applying to American University. I am unsure of my grades/scores, but I definitely feel as though they are inadequate. Please let me know what you think my chances are of being admitted, and especially chances of financial aid/scholarships. I am one of those upper-middle class students who can’t afford spending $50,000 a year on an education.

Sex: Male
Race: Caucasian/White
State: New York (Greater NYC Area)
GPA: ~3.7 UW; my school does not report weighted.
SAT: 1210/1600 or 1830/2400 – 600CR, 610M, 620W (I will be retaking it in October along with SAT Subject Tests)
AP: I will have taken eight AP courses by the time I graduate and seven AP exams. I have only received my score for World History (4/5).

My class rank is comfortably within the top 25% but I am not sure yet.

ECs:
• Student Government (Member; 2012–2013)
• President (2013–) of the Foreign Language Honor Society
• President (2013–) of the Foreign Language Club
• Vice President (2013–2014), President (2014– of ‘Sachem Cares,’ my school’s community service club.
• Communications Director (2014–2015) of the National Honor Society
• [prospective] President of the Social Studies Honor Society
• Organizer of three Blood Drives per year.
• Communications Intern at an engineering firm in both the Summer of 2013 and 2014

I am a member of five honor societies at my school: NHS, Foreign Language Honor Society, Social Studies Honor Society, English Honor Society and Science Honor Society.

I partake in community service/tutoring often. I have up to 6 strong teacher recommendations, excluding that of my guidance counselor.

––

Please let me know my chances and what I need to improve on. Thank you!

I’d reccomend picking the strongest out of the six teacher recommendations unless they are significantly different. Many colleges state that the most they will accept is three unless they bring something significant to the table that they would not be able to tell from reading the rest of your application. American tends to give good merit scholarships, but yeah definitely get those SAT scores up a bit. You show great leadership in your ECs so that is always a plus. Good luck!

I’m not really for chancing because I think it’s stupid but I’m a student at AU and I’ll say I had similar stats and extracurriculars when I was admitted to AU… except for the fact that I’m lower-middle class coming from a part of the suburbs that has extremely low student achievement rates and I’m Asian.

PS what do you mean you can’t afford spending $50k a year on your education? Last I checked AU was #2 in the nation for most expensive tuition so you might want to rethink wanting to attend AU… especially if you’re not coming on merit and you might not get a good FA package considering you’re white, upper middle class, etc

@bk4972b, I mean 50K a year. I am working fervently to improve my SAT score by October so that I can attend on some sort of scholarship.

Good luck!
