Essays: My essays are decent. I compared my Grandma's love for cooking to my love for Medicine in One Essay. In the other, I wrote about my struggles with Math and Tennis.

I had trouble adjusting to High School and had trouble from Freshman year to 1st semester of Sophomore year. However, after a chance in mentality, I managed to get Mostly As with maybe 1 B every Semester.

No chance. The admissions people would rather take out of state kids than you with same
stats. But then again, who knows.

^ ■■■■■ dont worry you have a decent

lol…he asked for a opinion. I answered honestly, and now I am a ■■■■■? . Maybe you should apply as transfer. Practically all transfers get in…

i got in with similar stats, but slightly stronger ECs & leadership experience.

Unfortunately, hds404 is right. A 3.74 GPA immediately brings down your entire application (no joke - UC’s are known for giving numbers to applications).

A slightly lower GPA doesn’t necessarily take you out of the running…

[University of California: StatFinder](http://statfinder.ucop.edu/library/tables/table_16-2009.aspx)

Your extracurriculars seem pretty strong, so I think you have a fair chance.

The 3.74 is UW. I agree that if it was the OPs UC GPA then their chances would be almost shot. I think the OP has a good chance, but not really a great shot of getting it.

What’s an OP?

OP = original poster (person who created the thread)

It would be helpful to know some additional information:

What is your intended major?
What is your class rank or approximate decile, if school does not rank?
Are you an ELC applicant (top 4%)?

fivehigher gave you a good link to look at (UC Statfinder) but, unlike fivehigher, I didn’t think your EC’s were that solid (except for tennis).

I really don’t understand why GPA plays any sort of role at all in college admissions. A 4.0 at one high school can be far easier to achieve than a 2.0 at say . . . TJHSST, especially with teachers and counselors padding grades to make their students “more competitive”. Standardized test scores offer a much clearer picture of a student’s academic abilities. I think dropping SAT subject tests is the stupidest ideas the UC admissions people can come up with.

I’d say L&S yes. Engineering no.

What is your intended major? Chemistry/Politlca Science
What is your class rank or approximate decile, if school does not rank? Probably top 20%. Our school incorporates Freshman year into Class Rank, which is when I completely dropped the ball.
Are you an ELC applicant (top 4%)? No, I’m not an ELC Applicant

In retrospect, you may have been better off going in “undeclared”. I’m not sure how easy it would have been to then change into Chemistry. However, some majors are next to impossible to switch into after the fact, such as engineering. I still think you have a realistic shot, but your chances would be much better at “2-tier” UCSD. UC’s will evaluate you based on sophomore and junior year, so I wouldn’t worry too much about what happened during your freshman year. Good luck!
