My class rank is 24 out of 308 (top 10%), my school does not weight college classes. I have over 250 hours of community service. I ride 3-4 buses a day for over 2 hours to attend a better school. I am writing about my experience/struggles, in a fight to get a better education for my college admission essay.

*My guidance counselor told my that I need to apply to schools I have chance of being accepted to, then she suggested a list of community colleges.

How rigorous have your classes been?

I’m taking the hardest classes offered at my school College pre-calculus, English composition 1 & 2 (college), Chemistry, Psychology, and Health Technologies (college) which is the class I’m getting my PCA, training in phlebotomy, and daycare license from. @dadeacman sorry for the late response, I got locked out of my account

Are you taking any APs?

@Dadeacman my school does not offer any AP classes, that is why I go to the career center where I can take college classes…

You are not a typical student for any of these schools however you are an interesting student! I don’t know how to answer the question without an ACT/SAT score or any AP’s it’s really hard to say. So I’m guessing all of these are reaches for you however that does not mean impossible. Apply to these and also your state flagship. Are you going into health care? I wish you the best of luck. Wherever you end up for college I would bet money you are going to have a fantastic and meaningful life.

@redpoodles Thank you and yes I’m going into healthcare. I want to become a family doctor and open up free clinics in public housing neighborhoods…

@hillyer300‌ You have very admirable ambitions and I’m rooting for you! Add some safety schools to your list and make it happen! Incidentally, my nephew went into the air force for a few years, then community college, then KU, then med school and he’s now a doctor! There are many roads to the same end spot–keep that in mind and consider some safety schools where you could get straight A’s as a stepping stone to med school as a plan B or even a plan A. Bowdoin is a great school but it’s a reach for EVERYBODY. I almost want to tell you to apply to Harvard, for the heck of it, because you have a compelling story and fantastic ambitions. But it will be difficult to get the A average there that you’d need for med school. Difficult for anybody! Good luck.

@redpoodles Thank you so much that means a lot to me. I just got accepted to Ohio State University- Main Campus today. It was one of my safety schools (against the recommendation of my guidance counselor lol). I’m still waiting on Bowdoin’s decision, but I’m happy that no matter what happens, I will be going to a good college
