Your SAT scores seem a little weak for CMU. I think you will need an SAT Math score in the 740-770 range, if you want to be competitive in Physics. Also, it seems as though you left the hardest AP courses, (AP Physics, AP Calculus, AP Chemistry, AP Computer Science, AP Statistics) for senior year. So, admission will also depend on how you do in these courses in the Fall semester of senior year. Good luck.

Yeah definitely try to work on your SAT math score. It is super low for CMU. However, do not let that discourage you from applying. My SAT scores were low for CMU (and I totally knew I was not in the range), but I applied ED, wrote bomb essays, and was accepted. So scores are not everything. That being said, your SAT II’s should be very good since you are trying to show admissions what subjects you excel in.

Your SAT is pretty low for CMU. But Hispanic and ranked number 2 in the class? If you raise your SAT by even 200 points, you will probably get in. Hell, you might even get in with your current scores. Good luck!

First, some advice: CMU uses the common app, which will only let you write about a handful of extracurriculars. Yours kind of seem all over the place, so I’d encourage you to focus on just your top 5 (or fewer) and really try to show achievement in those.

I think you have a chance, but it will depend which school(s) you apply to. If your essays are really that amazing, you’d have a good shot at H&SS. I second everything perazziman pointed out, though. Being Hispanic gives you a good edge, but you need to somehow demonstrate that you’ll be able to keep up in advanced math or English courses (depending on which school you’re aiming for).

To echo sorcelator’s advice, unless you can bring up your SAT scores significantly, your best shot at CMU is to apply to DC (formerly H&SS). Even there you probably need at least another 100 points in CR and WR. If you’re able to get in and do well your first year then you shouldn’t have difficulty transferring to MCS if that’s what you want to do.

Also, that was good advice by all to include a compelling essay with your application. They get read!

With all that noted, CMU seems like a reach for you. By all means reach, but have some safety schools in mind, too.
