Please chance me for Cornell, Brown, Stanford, Wellesley, FuDan+ETH Zurich. Thanks!

waves Hi y'all. So I briefly read the sticky by TokenAdult, and here's to me hoping that I post this chance thread in the right format. Do leave some comments etc. about what you think my chances are! Many thanks y'all :D

Right. Brief information about myself first.
I’m an international student currently studying in Asia. I have lived in four different countries for the better part of my life (all in Asia). I’m from Malaysia, so I guess that makes me some sort of a rarity? Lol, anyway, I am currently taking the IB Diploma and am currently in my junior year. I know there is still one more year before I take my final exams and fill out my applications, but I would really like to see my chances against the world, so to speak. I’m planning on doing biological sciences, maybe genetics in university.

Colleges to chance me for:
Cornell, Brown, Stanford, Wellesley, Fu Dan (uni in Shanghai. It’s alright is y’all don’t know much about it) and ETH Zurich (in Switzerland).

SAT: 1780 1st try.
CR+M+W= 650+590+540 (planning to take again during February. Aiming for >2100)

IB Predicted Grades:
-English Literature HL: 6
-Math SL: 5
-Chinese Language and Literature SL: 4
-Psychology HL: 4
-Drama SL: 6
-Biology HL: 5/6

EC’s:
-House Captain/Leader in my school. Only 12 students are selected from the senior school (Sophomore, Junior and Senior)
-Part of Badminton Team (well, we are currently forming a team. There’s no actual team yet)
-Volunteer teaching to grassroot children for two hours every week
-Involved with school theatre productions. As an actor, make-up manager and front of house (think publicist)
-Have won 4th place in a nation wide writing competition, awarded merit in 2 speech competitions as well.
-Part of the second team of my school to participate in the Model United Nations
-Head of Editing Department in Yearbook
-Took beginner German courses during 10th grade before dropping due to scheduling issues.

Aaaaand that sorta concludes my chancing thread. I do not have any work experience as there is not a strong culture of employing high school kids at where I’m studying now. So yea, thanks again! :) hugs self

Bump. Chance me and I’ll chance you back!

Cornell: Reach
Brown: Reach
Stanford: Reach
Wellesley: Reach

For Fudan: you might have to take the HSK (the Chinese equivalent to the TOEFL) if Fudan doesn’t recognize a 4 on the Chinese IB as proficient and the SAT won’t matter as much as in the other four. However, you might have to take an entrance test.

ETH Zurich might require you to write a 5-subject (reduced examination) or 9-subject (comprehensive examination) and the entire coursework is in German.

ok, I know i owe you a chance back but i really have no idea on how competitive it really is for internat’l students…BUT im thinking that if you write amazing essays on, say, the experiences you had in malaysia/china, why you want to go to the us etc, i think you have an ok chance. sorry, this is a really bad chance back but thats what i think

I need to know your GPA and your sat scores are way to low to be competitive
Cornell: Low
Brown: Low
Stanford: Low
Wellesley: Reach

Hope you have a backup plan…

Yea, I know my test scores are way below the averages of the schools I mentioned, but I can still work on them. :stuck_out_tongue: Thanks for the chances guys, it really helped me to know where I’m at compared to the rest of the world.
Say, are my EC’s alright? It’s actually quite hard to start anything in my school because a) it’s really small, b) well, Hong Kong doesn’t really have the same kind of ‘community’ mentality as the States. I am also thinking of applying to TASP this summer, and if I got in I would be… on cloud nine? :D

Thanks again!

don’t worry you’ll get in :)

I’m not too sure about the entrance exam, because I thought that international students are waived from it? Or I could use my SAT II scores to uh… cough cover up for my low grades :stuck_out_tongue: Everything is still rather uncertain now; I have another major exam coming up during May, so if I got raise my scores up in that exam, I think I’ll probably have a fairer chance at Cornell or other ‘good’ schools?

The international students don’t take the Gaokao as designed for domestic students but it’s not guaranteed that you’d be exempted from any test of any sort.
