So we moved to the U.S about 4 years ago and we came to Houston b/c our family lived here. I started as a Freshman in Spring High School and that was my first school and grade level in the United States. The thing is that when I came here, I didn't know anything about the school system and they basically screwed me over by giving me all regular classes in my freshman year and most in my sophomore year. I had to find everything on my own and I hope it's not too late. I currently have a 3.8/4.0 weighted GPA and a 4.7/5.0 unweighted GPA because I took 2 DC classes and all pre-ap classes except Spanish this year.

I really want to attend UT-Austin or Texas A&M, UT in my first choice but I doubt I’ll make into top 7% .

My stats (As of 11th grade): Unweighted GPA: 3.8/4.0, Weighted GPA: 4.75/5.0
Rank: 91/766, 11.8% (I was in top 17% in my sophomore year and brought it to 11.8% in my current junior year.)
Took US History and English 3 Dual Credit, a lot of Pre-Ap classes and planning to take 2 AP and 2 DC classes next year, which will be my senior year.
Started working this year, 15/20 hours per week, planning to continue work and maybe increase hours to 25/30.

Extracurricular activities:
• Accountant for Multi-Cultural Club, 3 years
• NHS
• Member of Student Council
• Ambassador of our school’s S.T.E.M academy
• Member of Science Club
Not a lot of volunteer work because I don’t have a car and my parents are busy with work etc.
Got my name in school’s Honor Roll about 5+. Received two certificates for good academic performance. (If that counts.)

I don’t think I will have a good SAT, around 1500-1600 maybe 1700. (Not that good of a test taker ).
Aiming for 27+ in ACT.

I think that if I keep doing good, by my senior year, I can be in top 10% and get auto-admit to A&M which I really want. I really wanted to attend UT but I don’t think that will happen.

My major will be Engineering, have not decided for the specific field yet but leaning towards Petroleum because I do live in Texas and earning a degree from A&M or UT will also be a bonus. Not 100% sure on the major specific but it will be a field in engineering. Please let me know your thoughts on my stats and every opinion and advice is appreciated, really looking for some help here.

These schools will either be safety (if you are in the auto-admit category, and the school is affordable), or reach (if you are not in the auto-admit category).

From our high school, more kids got in to UT Engineering than in TAMU Engineering - a big surprise. For auto-admit, they consider your rank after your junior year - so it does not matter what happens in your senior year. Your best hope is to get your test scores up much higher (like around 29-30 ACT). Also, you can submit the optional Essay S on Apply Texas to explain your situation.

UT will not guarantee engineering for any auto admit no matter how high your rank is. You would only be guaranteed a spot on campus not your major.

We’ve had two sons apply to both schools. Both qualified for auto TAMU admission. DS1 was accepted into UT EE with a 32 ACT score (35 math); DS2 was rejected from UT ME with a 33 ACT score (30 Math). All other factors were pretty equal between them. My advice is to focus on your math scores.

I would also apply to another school that would be more of a sure thing for you.

OP, UT Dallas might be a school to consider. You fit their auto admit criteria and acceptance would guarantee an engineering education. They do not offer petroleum but, since you aren’t certain, maybe another choice would interest you. They have an excellent tech rep in the area and strong connections with large companies like TI. UTD is also known for giving bright students high dollar scholarships. Maybe this could be a reliable back-up for you???

UT will be a reach for you unless you are a URM or in the top 7%. Even then you may not get into engineering with those scores. You have a better chance at A&M but the test scores need to improve.
