Chances for JHU, College of William and Mary, Boston College, UPenn, Cornell, Georgetown, Georgia Tech and UChicago

I got into both Cornell and JHU( i will be attending JHU). Your record is really impressive the only thing i would say is your SAT scores need improvement. You SAT I scores should be in the collegeboard mid percentiles of students accepted. Mine were Math - 710, Reading - 720 and Writing 610 ( Writing is really not that important, especially for Cornell they don’t even look at it). Also your SAT II scores should be in the 700’s mine were 710 for both Math Lv 1 and Bio M.

Thanks I am working really hard on my sat hopefully I break a 2000. How do I increase my reading to a 700? Is it just practice? or is there some pointers you could give me. I just have 1 more chance for the SAT. then on to subject tests.

For the reading section the main thing you need to worry about is staying focused on what your reading. Before i would “read” the passages but not actually grasp what it was saying. The first time i took the SAT i got a 620 the second time i jumped to a 720. If it helps stop after each paragraph for a quick 10 seconds to make sure you grasped what you just read. For the longer passages what i would do was look at the questions first because for the longer passages most of the questions refered to specific lines so i would read upto one line more than the first question asked then answer that question and continued in that fashion. For the subject test make sure you take it in a subject you love and are good at. I loved Biology the year i took the SAT Bio test, i was self studying for the AP Bio test( which i ended up getting a 4 givining me credit for Bio I and II). I also would recomend to take Math Lv 1 regardless of how good you are at Math, you can take three in one day take Math Lv 1, Math Lv2 and one other (perferably in the field you plan on majoing in). Hope this helps :)

Wow I would say similar to superman that you have a really great record and great EC’s including volunteering. However, your SAT score is low for JHU but even with your low score you still have a good shot at getting in. If anything, to study I would say buy the blue SAT book because it is made by the test maker.
Good luck!

How do I increase my reading to a 700?

You increase your scores by buying those SAT practice exam books and do at least on test each week until your next test. The SAT prep schools which have the highest success rate test their students once a week for 10-14 weeks. If you can do 14 practice exams and then review the answers and understand your mistakes, your overall score WILL increase. it should increase by a minimum of 300 points over the summer. You can buy the practice exams on Amazon. Also, if Hopkins IS your number one choice, apply Early Decision. That will give you the greatest hook at this point. At least they will know you are serious about them as first choice. You can always apply to EA schools as a back up and your state school.

IMHO, you’re in everywhere except Penn and UChicago. Yes, raising the SAT would give you more of a comfort factor, but demographics matters and it’s a real factor on your side. Since that’s just the reality so why not go with it.
