Please Chance Me for Middlebury

Hi! Please let me know my chances for being admitted to Midd ED1.

I have taken 12 APs over the my high school career with one per the first two years and five per the the last two. I have gotten a mixture of 3,4, and 5s, but mostly 4s and 5s. I have otherwise taken honors classes whenever possible. The only standard classes I have taken are those such as gym, personal finance, and journalism.

I have been involved with yearbook which is in my schedule under journalism since sophomore year. I was a staff member first and then I got promoted to editor junior year and now I am a senior editor. Journalism has always brought down my GPA because I take it every year as a standard class.

I maxed out my schools offerings of German. I started in eighth grade when I would walk over from the middle school to take German I H with the freshmen at the high school. I continued until 11th grade when I took AP German which is the highest level offered. I will stay involved this year as president of both German Club and German National Honors Society

4 years Model UN (9-10)
3 years Youth in Government (10-12)
2 years Best Buddies (9-10)
2 years Photography Club (10-11)
2 years Investment Club as Founder and President (11-12)
5 years German Club (8-12) (Officer and now President)
Science National Honors Society
English National Honors Society
History National Honors Society (Vice President)
National Honors Society
Journalism National Honors Society
German National Honors Society (Previously Officer and now President)
Triple Honor Roll (9-12)
200+ Hours as a Volunteer at my Local Library (9-11)
20-25 Hours per week as Team Leader working and supervising 2-3 other people at a local shop (11-12)

I have gotten a mixture of As and Bs over the course of my high school career with 2 Cs, one sophomore year and one junior year. Both were in math, which is definitely my weakest subject. I am not top 15% as I go to a very large, very competitive public high school. The combination of journalism and my shortcomings in math killed me.

I have three glowing recommendations. One is from my AP Lang teacher who loved me. I really excelled in his class. The second is from my math teacher who gave me a C junior year. She wrote about how hard I tried and how I continued to come in before and after school throughout the year. The third is my yearbook advisor who will talk about my leadership and how she has seen my grow. I am submitting this as an additional rec because I haven’t had her academically since freshman year English.

I wrote my essay about how hiking in the Smoky Mountains has been a common thread that binds three generations of my family. It is well written.

I think you have a chance–the C probably hurt you some, but other than that you seem to have pretty good stats and qualifications. <3
If you apply ED, you will increase your chance by a lot. However, not being in the top 15% really can hurt you. Does your school do rankings? What’s your GPA?

I was going to say No, until I got to the last line. As a legacy you will get a good look and your ACT definitely puts you into contention.

Tennessee and legacy? I’d say your chances are pretty good. They would be even better if you were male.

Put ourself in the position of the admissions committee, @ranger99. Why do you want to go to Midd (and not Williams, Amherst or Villanova)? What is it that you bring to Midd? In my alumni interviewing, this is perhaps the area where legacy* applicants fall down - many are great, get in and do well. However, more than in other categories, legacies are more likely to come across as doing it because my mother/brother/grandfather/etc went to Midd, without explaining what it was that appealed to them.

*I hate this term, and would scrap legacy status entering admissions decisions immediately, personally. Before anyone gets too upset, the reason for this is fairness, and that legacy kids actually already have a Midd bonus in that their parents/whoever have a much better idea of what Midd is about and what is required than applicants without that kind of heritage.

I think you look competitive.
