I applied to MIT, Harvey Mudd, and CalTech (among others, don't worry I have much safer schools than those three) and was wondering what my chances at gaining admission to one of the three is approximately. Thanks in advanced and I will look at your statistics if you "chance" me!

ACT: composite- 34 math-34 science-34 english-34 reading-33 essay-12
SAT II: math level 2- 800, chemistry-760
GPA unweighted: 3.85
APs: Vergil, Chemistry (5 on the test), AB Calc (5 on the test), BC Calc, Physics C, Biology, English
Most other courses are either honors or CIS (college in the schools)
I also did a year long organic chemistry independent study
Summer underwater research course at cornell (college level 730)- grade: A
Summer computational medicinal chemistry enrichment course at Northwestern- grade: A
Essays: Very Strong
Recommendations: Very Strong, including a letter from a research mentor from Cornell
Ethnicity: Caucasian
Gender: Male
High School: Private
Extracurriculars:
Minor research at Cornell through the underwater research course (one year)
Marine Toxicology Research through R.J.Dunlap Marine Conservation Program (one year)
Science Bowl and Math Team (one year)
Tennis (recruited for CalTech, but that's essentially meaningless. the coaches at MIT and Harvey Mudd said they can't help me in admissions) (four years)
Scientific Diver and Specialist- Full voting member of the American Academy of Underwater Sciences (four years)
Instrumental Music- college camps etc. (four years)

Thanks for taking the time to read and let me know your opinion of my chances!

I think your chances of getting in are very solid; the letter of reccomendation from your Cornell research mentor will perhaps let the college know of your interest in the ivy leagues/MIT/etc. You seem to have an overall strong viewpoint and sense of college experience, which is definitely what schools want to see. Good luck!

Your scores are really consistent, and that underwater course you took at a prestigious school and earned an A will count for something. MIT might be a risk, but CalTech and Harvey Mudd are pretty reasonable. Chance me? :)

MIT and CalTech are hard to everyone to get into. Your stats look really great, except for your ECs. I’m not sure how much these three schools care about them though. I think you have a good chance for Harvey Mudd.

I think Mudd is totally reasonable for you. Caltech is more of a high match. MIT is a crapshoot for anyone, but I think you stand some chance. Your research and such will make you stand out, and you have great test scores and a fairly strong GPA to back it up. Best of luck to you!

I think your chances are vey strong. I would recommend you do some research into the college’s programs and find something they offer in the sciences, engineering, pre-med or … that you really love. FOCUS in an application is important- show them how your skills, activities and previous coursework are suited to their specfic area of expertise.

Co-curric, personal details are very importantand these will be shown in your CV. These are serious science schools- consider what your true passion is and elaborate on this in a Personal Statement showing how you will do well at it in their school.

Your scores are great but your GPA’s a little bit on the low side - nothing that will knock you out of the game by any means, but still low, though it depends on your school rank. At some schools a 4.0 is equivalent to a 3.8 at others. Even if your school doesn’t rank, your school college profile will still state the grade distribution, so make sure you’re in the top 10% or so.

Your extracurriculars are decent, with a nice science focus, though not quite stellar. I’d say you have excellent chances at Harvey Mudd. CalTech and MIT are both reaches, but still within range.

You seem like a really good student. You have really good scores. You have great summer program stuff, but your SAT II chem is good not great. I think you have a pretty good chance at all those schools. Hope to cya at MIT!

I think your chance for all three are >50% (Harvey Mudd is probalby the highest of the three, Caltech is probably the lowest of the three)

My son got accepted in to Caltech class of 2016 and I think you have a better case.

SAT:2140
SAT II : math II 790, Chemistry 740, Biology 690
GPA: 4.8 (Weighted)

No college research

The only thing that push him over the top, I believe, is baseball. My son got in touch with the baseball coach and he e-mail and call us several times. He also told me that he does not have impact on admission, but he does submit a list of names to the admission office. My son played varsity baseball for 3 years and also played summer travel (junior legion and senior legion) team.

yo kid up there^ make your own thread. it seems rude the way you posted your stuff here. especially if your only commentary was “I think you got a really good shot of getting in.”

@the creator of this thread I think you have decent chances. but MIT and CalTech are hard for everyone to get into, no matter how good they may seem. so i dunno.
I would say post your region, but they dont care about that stuff (or so I was told by former director of admissions at MIT when I met her) they’re one of the few schools that doesnt have quotas for each region.
keep up the good work though. you’ve def got a shot
